We are looking at purchasing a 5th wheel to do some traveling. Just wondering how much towing power we might need since we are looking at possibly a new truck as well.

This is a chart of the weights etc etc. Just seeking advice.

Length

42.58 ft. (511 in.)

Width

8.42 ft. (101 in.)

Height

12.5 ft. (150 in.)

Weight

Dry Weight

12,617 lbs.

Payload Capacity

3,000 lbs.

GVWR

15,617 lbs.

Hitch Weight

2,490 lbs.

Thanks!

Must be a Diesel, preferably a dually with 8ft bed. I towed a 39ft fifth wheel for 8 years with a 2500 diesel, because it's what I had.

Wrong question. You need payload capacity and big arse brakes. 2,500 pounds on the hitch is a lot. You need a dually for that trailer.

Power is irrelevant. Having a diesel is nice. The exhaust brake is very nice out west. But, the main thing is you need a 1 ton dually.

As others have said, get a dusky. I’ve been towing our 5th wheel for a few years with a 2017 f250 with the 6.7 diesel. The truck “pulls” it no problem but sometimes the tail wags the dog. In the time I’ve also upgraded my equipment that I use for my small land clearing business. It forced my hand to purchase a dually. I’m hoping within the week I’ll have it here. I went with the F450 due to size of brakes, payload of almost 6k, towing capacity, and turning radius. It has the wide track front end . They are all expensive but this one was actually less than some loaded up F150’s.

This is backwards. It must be a 1 ton, and preferably a diesel.

Rear duals is less than a $1,500 option. Diesel engine is generally a $12k+ option. A gas dually will tow a whole assload of weight just fine. Slower than the diesel to rip all that weight up a mountain side, sure. A 1 ton dually gaser is a far better choice than a 3/4 ton diesel for a 5th wheel. FAR better.

Im fighting off the urge for a new 1 ton gas burner dodge. We've been getting good service from the new 6.4's and the transmission is great. The prices are fantastic right now. You can get a brand new one in the low 40's.

You would do that over the GM 6.6 or Ford 7.3?

For the price, yes. Itd be my 3rd preference behind Ford and GMC in that order, but its also $10k+ cheaper similarly configured by the time you leave the lot. Itd be a good fit for OP if price is a serious consideration. Its by far the cheapest 14k GVWR truck option. The best dealership in the country is in Lake Charles and they make ordering what you want super easy, will deliver it, and will apply deep discounts to custom orders.

If I was getting a Ford id get a 6.8 because id be getting an XL. The 7.3 drives some crazy package or trim requirements that drives the price way up. Its not a lot cheaper than an XL diesel. Ford dealerships as far as I know offer zero discounts on custom orders. Neither does GM.

It is my understanding you can take the rebates at the time of order or delivery, whichever is better, when going through Ford.

I hope that is the case because I was planning on ordering a f150.

Read some of the motorhome message boards on the Ford 7.3 gas burner, they are not holding up real well in heavy duty usage.

Has that persisted lately? I know they had problems early on in the cab and chassis stuff. Ford was really hanging their hat on that engine as an economical diesel alternative and I figured they'd have that sorted by now.

Only answer here is a 3/4 ton diesel of your choice. They all will do a great job and it’s just preference.

1 ton would be best but the 3/4 tons are well equipped also.

That’s a super heavy tongue weight. Don’t forget the tailgate. Lol

Thats thats the 2nd worst option behind only a half ton, and even some half tons might be better. 3/4 ton diesels have ultra low payload capacities.

As I said earlier, a 1 ton gasser would be a far better option than a 3/4 ton diesel.
