Has the potential to be the biggest sports forgery scandal ever. I had a side business doing mystery box breaks on Tiktok for autographed helmets, bats, and jerseys, and while I was familiar with Mister Mancave, I never bought from him. I'd wager that many of my suppliers did, though. Seems like they're all in on it. Pretty wild that this guy (who is clearly pretty dumb) was able to run such an operation. This dude would have authentication events where big reps would come to his place in person and certify fake shite.

What's crazy is that there's no way to know whether what you have is fake or not, unless you brought an item to a signing event and watched whatever player sign your shite in front of you. The forged autos are so perfect that even the signers themselves can't tell, and the certifications on the item themselves match serial numbers from the actual Fanatics/JSA/Beckett/Whoever databases.

Police in Westfield say the body of a man was found Wednesday as officers tried to serve a search warrant.

Investigators believe the death resulted from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

According to a City of Westfield spokesperson, police had attempted to serve the warrant Tuesday as part of an investigation into an alleged counterfeit sports memorabilia scheme.

On July 16, that investigation took officers to the 300 block of Hoover Street, near U.S. 31 and North Union Street. When police tried to serve the search warrant, they discovered the body.

On Thursday, July 17, the Hamilton County Coroner's Office identified the deceased as 45-year-old Brett LeMieux. His manner and cause and deaths are pending toxicology results.

The FBI is assisting in the investigation. Police did not release any other details.

In the movies they always end up working for the FBI helping catch other forgers. Now they just use computers and shite. Personally, I blame AI for his death.

It is. The people that would get on my streams had minimum wage jobs and would spend hundreds with me gambling on the chance to win a mini helmet with CJ Spiller's autograph and then celebrate like they won the lottery

I'd imagine we see a sharp drop in the market with people panic selling, then it'll come right back up and continue on its merry way

They should have memorabilia from attorneys with strong morals and solid ethics...

I just never saw the allure of buying sports stuff from other people that didn't see it signed - there's just a different feeling of getting autographs and such on your own. I have an autographed Stockton/Malone basketball that I got after a game in 2002. It's a prized possession of mine because they signed it for me in front of me. I also have a Saints helmet with several autographs including Colston, Brees, Reggie, Morestead, Hartley, Shockey, Jimmy, etc - brought it to Chucks in Albany several times for their signings and got most of the Super Bowl team autos. Again, it wouldn't have the same feel if I had bought it from some guy in Indiana.

That's huge.

I had read that most of the autographed items in the sports memorabilia market was fake. So this doesn't exactly surprise me.

I have a genuine Doug Williams autographed piece of paper from 1988 obtained the month after he won Super Bowl MVP. He signed it for me in the airport while we were waiting to board a plane to Disney World. It's legit and in mint condition because my mom made sure to get it laminated ASAP. I also have a genuine Mickey Mouse autographed piece of paper (also laminated) from the same trip.

I may be willing to sell them as a set for $40k

If you think about it, it’s fricking stupid anyway. Who cares if someone famous signed something? Same as original art.

It looks the same who fricking cares if it’s a copy? Who would even know?

If they signed something for me in front of me, I'd value it personally. But why would you or anyone else? It's weird to me.

Agreed. My boys bought me an autographed picture of Joe Namath in his Bama playing days. I thought it was kinda neat and had it in my mancave. The signature faded. Joe lived in the northern part of our county. My younger son, through connections, got in touch with Joe and had him resign it personally. Means more now.

Pretty huge difference between a forged signature and a random print vs original artwork.

So then basically it’s as good as something that was actually signed, right? If there’s literally no way to tell the difference, who’s to say yours is fake and others are real?

I’m genuinely asking.

It's exactly why autographs in general are such a farce
