Looking to take an anniversary trip next summer. We have never been to an AI. Some of the ones on my list (based on Reddit & TD) searches include:
Excellence Playa Mujeres
Secrets Maroma Beach Riviera Cancun
Excellence Punta Cana
Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana
Any opinions on these and/or any others?
In your opinions, is the upgrade to the "Club" levels worth it? The only thing that jumps out at me regarding the upgrades is the cabanas at the beach.
Room type would be an ocean view suite.
Price range around $5k including flights.

I've done this one and thoroughly enjoyed it. Restaurants were largely solid with good variety, so you aren't eating just the same thing every day. If you do any of the Excellence ones, make sure to ask for their house hot sauces when you go to the mexican and latin restaurants. Good amount of activities and the nighttime stuff was a lot of fun. Drinks were decent enough, while there were plenty of very sugary and water down ones, if you frequented a similar area and got to know some of the wait staff/bar tenders and tipped, I was getting some very strong cubatas. When I was there, they were partnered with Dos Equis, so they had the lager and the amber on draft everywhere as well.

I thought it was tbh but also wouldn't say it is a "must", but it was nice. The included shuttle to and from the airport was nice. Generally, some of the restaurants will have some items on the menu that aren't included unless you are a club member. They will end up being extra charges at then end. Usually isn't a ton, but just not having to care about it and order anything and everything without thinking was nice. Had some extra pools and bars able to access as well, which made things easy when the main areas got packed. It definitely added some extra "can check out and not worry about shite" to the trip, which for what we were there for, was definitely nice.
ETA: I’ll add, the beaches for this one, while still very nice, isn’t the best there is in the area. It was much more secluded than some of the others, which we really liked, but there are better ones as far as views and quality. We had a great area by the beach bar that was almost always empty, under some nice trees so good shade. Was a great spot to post up at. However, if you’re significant other really is big on having the most picturesque beach, some of the others are a little better there.

Went to Secrets Maroma Beach Riviera Cancun two years ago. Opted for the swim out pool. I would choose the swim out over an upper level ocean view. It was awesome being able to swim literally whenever. We also did the club level. The biggest benefit was the club level restaurant that wasn’t a buffet. There are other perks like a devoted section of the beach and what you get in your minibar. The beach was nice. All of that was around $5k including flights.

I would highly recommend Valentin Imperial Riviera Maya as well. Food and drinks were very good. We did a swim up room as well. 6 days/nights was around $5200 flights included.
Large spread-out property, shows every night after dinner, and live music in the courtyard by the restaurants and lobby area each night after the show. We did an excursion to Xplor park at Xcaret one day while there
We chose Valentin based on friends recommendation, they had been multiple times

Are you a Costco member? Even if not you can search their travel without signing in. Punch in destination, when you are traveling, then narrow it down from there. 5 star, adults only, all inclusive. And there are plenty of reviews from actual people who have stayed there, verified by Costco.

We are going to VIRM in October and I am looking forward to this. Not sure what to expect, but it looks like a great place. I can report back to the OP and let them know our experience once we return.

I will be the mean guy today and I will tell you that you should search this topic, there are at least 20 threads on this very thing over the past couple of months

Le Blanc was VERY nice. We went last fall. Just know going in to decline the sales pitch. Even when they offer you $750 in spa credits.

You'll get more bang for your buck in Excellence Punta Cana vs. Excellence anywhere in Mexico, for some reason similar rooms for similar days are about $1000 cheaper in Punta Cana,
There's also Excellence El Carmen which is also in Punta Cana about a mile from Excellence PC. Its newer and nicer.

Headed to Atelier Playa Mujeres next week. Will report back. Le Blanc in Cabo is great though.
