Haven’t had a gaming console since 360, what should I get?

I haven’t had a gaming console in 15 years or maybe longer. The last one I had was a Xbox 360 that my brother and I played NCAA college football on for hours at a time.
I have no idea what consoles are even out there now, or what’s the best. I want to buy one, but honestly won’t be playing enough to justify spending a lot. I was thinking about finding one on fb marketplace honestly. lol
What do yall recommend? I’ll be looking to play mostly sports games, but probably some COD type games as well. I could possibly be playing some multiplayer, but will probably be a lot of single player. I want something user friendly and simple to set up.

Before purchasing, I'd recommend reviewing and researching Xbox game pass and see if you like that deal and value you can get with your money for a monthly subscription. If you think that's a service you would take advantage of and is good value, then go with a Xbox series X. You can opt for the way cheaper Xbox series S as well, however it is noticeably less powerful and the experience won't be as nice as the full powered console.
If Game pass isn't something you want to subscribe too, you will want to go with the PS5.

Id just research both on your own. Look at the popular games each have to offer. Each console has their exclusives as well so research both of those. Research the subscription services and the value you think you would get out of either or.
Try to avoid the biases. Had I have been you and just listened to the guy above me ida been pissed. He is leaving out critical information.

If you got the money get a PC, especially for single player

xbox is what i'd suggest, and you can get them on the cheap

Yep just get an xbox series S for $300 and then get gamepass. That'll probably be enough especially if you are just looking to play sports games.

if you want to get a recurring monthly cost subscription to games then xbox is superior.
if you dont want to pay monthly and just pick up cheap used titles once every couple of months check into ps5 (pro is better marginally, i wouldn't recommend the extra $ for your needs, get a good used regular one)
IF you had cash to throw down, PC, but you said you dont want to. That is still the best option though.

I have the cash, but I’m all about a “value purchase”. I just don’t know how much I’ll play so I’m probably looking to get a console, 2 remotes, and like 5 games max starting off.

no that's fair. and i agree, if that's what you're looking for console is the better option.

if thats your aim and not a subscription then definitely ps5 would be my vote. Again, your option would be ps5 standard or pro. Pro is more powerful, but its an added i think 200 dollar price tag. I dont think its 200 worth more powerful, but you will notice some difference in newer games.
Pro comes in only digital format, no disc drive so you have to buy and download everything online. There is an optional disc drive you can buy though.
Standard comes in a digital form (cheaper) or one with a built in disc drive.
hope that helps. I personally have a disc built in standard PS5 and have yet run into a game that i said , "man, wish i had a pro". (Ghost of yotai might be the first, we will see).

I was in your shoes until a week ago. Had PS1,PS2 and XB, XB360 and play regularly until college. It has been roughly 10-15 years since I had a console and I recently purchased an Xbox X. Loving it so far! I did buy the one with the disc option but you are able to download games as well without issue. I also have Gamepass and have liked it so far.

I have a series x and ps5, look at the games you'd want to play as exclusives

Well when you have that many games on there, not every one of them are going to be historically great or good games. It’s all according to the person and what they are interested in. I have game pass and yes there is a lot of meh to pretty bad games on there. But at the same time there has been or is a lot of really good games on there as well.

The good games everyone has already played, people act like gamepass is the second coming of jesus, it's not. Had it for a year, 99% of the new stuff on there is trash, just like PS+ extra.

The OP hasnt had a system since the 360 so he may really enjoy the older titles. I dont play as much as I did when I was younger but still a pretty good bit and I always find great games on there to play that I missed over the years .Just in the past few days they added Little Nighmares 2 , Rise of the Tombraider, Tony Hawk 3,4 Remake, Robocop Rogue City, The Ascent, Trials of Mana. All good -to great games and I've only played 2 of them. If you play mostly only newer 3rd party games then Gamepass probably isnt for you.

To add to the previous poster who mentioned looking into Game Pass, XBox now owns Activision, and that includes all Call of Duty games. They are slowly placing the Activision back catalog onto the Game Pass service, but the new releases hit on day of release. For the older COD games, I believe there are currently about 4 of them on the service. They recently added COD:WW2, which had a pretty good single player storyline.
Also, EA Play is included with the service and EA adds their newest sports games a few months after release. This also means all of EA'S Battlefield games are included with the service. When doing research into Game Pass, be sure to also review what games EA has on their service because those games aren't always as clearly advertised by XBox as being "on Game Pass."

If exclusive games is your criteria, Nintendo Switch is the answer. It is far superior to the other consoles in terms of exclusive games.
If you go this route, get the newly-released Switch 2.
PS has a slight edge over XBox in terms of exclusives, mostly with older games, but they are both completely overshadowed by Nintendo in this regard. Just no comparison. Also, Switch is portable and can be played like a Game Boy.
