Long read but well worth it!
quote:

It wasn't until about an hour before his commitment that Lamar Brown felt he truly knew where he was going to college. The process had been whittled down to a couple of schools, with LSU and Texas A&M leading the rest of the pack in recent days.

But it was a decision that went down to the wire, with the hometown ultimately winning out for Brown's services. So when Brown called up LSU running backs coach and recruiting coordinator Frank Wilson to give him the news, it was a culmination of three years of hard work from this LSU staff.

"He was coming from Lake Charles but I told him and he said he almost wrecked. He was happy for me, this is what he wanted, he feels like it's what's best position for me and my family," Brown told reporters after his commitment. Since his ninth grade year, there's been a sense that this position is where Brown would ultimately wind up. A top-10 recruit announcing on the biggest sports platform for all of the country to see. That's how long the purple and gold have been recruiting Brown, who if you haven't heard, goes to high school on campus at University High.

The casual follower of recruiting or even someone looking from the outside in would logically say 'there's no way LSU doesn't land a high school prospect like that.' It's simply not that cut and dry in this day and age of college football and the Tigers had to fight to the bitter end to earn Brown's commitment. It was a wild final 24-48 hours in particular as the Aggies never really backed away from their full court press.

?Of course NIL played a role in this decision and it would be disingenuous to suggest otherwise. But the relationships Brown has with Wilson and the entire LSU staff, staying at home to play in Death Valley and building a legacy in Baton Rouge were all very real factors that tipped the scales in LSU's favor.

"It just feels good to play for my state and city. Not just for three or four years but for years after football life. I'm just blessed to be in this position and ready to play in Tiger Stadium," Brown said. "Frank Wilson. He's been on me since the first day. The whole staff, I have a relationship with the whole staff, everybody on the staff that helped for this moment."

There's arguably been no recruit who's been around the football ops facility more than Brown in totality over the last three years. He started coming to games as a freshman on the sidelines, attended all of the home games as a sophomore in 2023 and most of them last year in 2024.

That created a level of comfortability that he has with the program that's pretty unique. His former U-High teammate Keylan Moses enrolled at LSU in the fall as a member of the 2025 class. Brown also has relationships with other players on the roster and commits in this current 2026 class as the Tigers look to build a special group for this cycle.

It's been known for a while the defensive side of the ball is where Brown will start his career, despite being a highly regarded player on both sides of the line of scrimmage. There's some positional versatility with him to play on the outside as a defensive end and then also slide in as a tackle on occasion to help exploit mismatches with his speed.

Brown is in that 290-295 range at the current moment and that's where he hopes to stay as he goes into his freshman year at LSU. He's working towards being an early enrollee but that's still something he's working out with his current school and doesn't know if it'll happen definitively.

Next to Brown, LSU is building quite the class on the defensive line. Five-star edge rusher Trenton Henderson committed to the program this month and four-star, top-10 defensive tackle Richard Anderson has been a core piece of this class since this time a year ago.

"With the d-line we have right now it's gonna be hard to block. Hopefully they're getting ready for us because we're gonna bring a lot of havoc to the SEC," Brown said.

Brown, like his teammate Moses last year, wants to be a central figure to helping build this class up over the final six months before signing day. With 15 commits on board, the Tigers want to hold onto those players while also grabbing some more big fish that are still out there.

He also told reporters that his recruitment is done and that he doesn't plan on taking visits anywhere else besides LSU. This was a critical piece to get on board and despite some uncertain moments down the stretch, LSU proving it keeps players of this magnitude in the state is still a strong message to send to other powerhouse programs.

"I don't plan on just being on a team. I plan on playing freshman year day one. Until I get there I'm just gonna keep getting better," Brown said. "Bring home a national championship. That's all I want."

Said he didn't know what his decision was until about an hour before he made it live on TV. If he didn't know an hour before, is he really committed? I'll believe it when he's enrolled, on campus and practicing in the spring. The QB from Michigan was all in and committed as well, was helping trying to recruit kids to come here until a boat load of money showed up then he wasn't so committed. I don't blame the kid for leaving for the money, heck when you 18 years old and someone offers you several million to play and it can help your family, I'd go too. I just don't get all excited about recruiting anymore till the kids are on campus and we see who we have.

I mean he tweeted that the good thing about his recruitment being over is that he can focs on his team and his senior season. That doesn't sound like a guy thats still considering things. Now I realize he is 17 and kids flip on a dime but it was an encouraging tweet.

Of coarse it was last hour for 24/7 who I think were the only major service with him going to 8&4.
These recruiting sites r fun to read but rarely have any inside info. As far as will he stick and comparing him to the Michigan QB.
It's a big difference him being from Michigan and also a generational talent. There is no 10 mil packages for DL guys.
