Heading south in Indiana. Around Mile Marker 220 ol' boy's hitch cargo carrier, with two full Yeti Coolers, falls off. He might have been going 80 mph in the left lane. We were on the right lane. Carrier flies off the hitch, skids along the Interstate and lands off the side of the road. Luckily, no one ran into it. This thing was large. Can't imagine if someone had run into that going 75+ mph.
So, we try to catch the dude. Wife (no pics) sticks her head out the window and starts waving her arms to get his attention. Just kind of looks at her. So, we say frick it, he's lost his coolers and contents.
So down the road about 20 miles, he pulls off an exit. I decide to be the good Samaritan type and still try to let him know. Finally catch up to him at the stop sign. Kind of a rural area so no traffic. I honked my horn at him and got out of the car. Yeah, he could have been strapped. But you gotta do what you gotta do.
Told him what happened. He looks at the hitch and says, "how did that happen", obviously distraught. I would be too if I'd just lost $700 worth of cooler and contents. Thanked me, headed back north. Will never know if he found it or not. But that was quite the experience. Never seen anything like that.
His wife was with him. Would have loved to have heard that conversation as he headed North. Felt real sorry for both of them.

I found an 85 qt Yeti ice chest oj the side of I-10 about two years ago. Idk how they lost it.

People overload those things and then it shears off. They claim 500 lb capacity but I wouldn't trust that from one of those cheap Chinese ones that most people buy

Was driving on I-10 outside Houston in my FIL's F150. Luggage in the bed. A car pulls alongside pointing at the back of our truck. Couldn't hear what they were saying but decided we needed to pull over and inspect. The tailgate had opened and luggage was about the dump out.
So, for everyone who has been alerted to crap like that...TYFYS

Sometimes people leave them in a boat when going down the road. Boat bounces and the coolers fly out. I've seen it happen two times.

Maybe it was 500lb capacity brand new, but you put some years on it and all the sudden the cheap weld points and bolts start corroding and it sure as hell isn’t anymore.

Good on you for taking your time and doing the right thing.
I once saw a guy on bike lose his phone on !-55 S just outside of Laplace early one morning. I was headed to airport, just before Laplace he noticed it and took the exit and started to look through his pockets and backpack. I told he lost it about 5 miles back. It was a bad day for him and a pain in the arse getting back on interstate for me, but I'd want someone to do the same I guess.

I always figured it was maybe on a flatbed truck or something because it's heavy. I wouldn't have thought it would bounce that hard. I had to change the rubber feet and rubber locks on it. Other than that, no cracks in the plastic.

Which city in Indiana were ya at on I-65 when this happened?

I talked to some guys at the Piggly Wiggly in Lafayette. They were loading up on grocery’s to go hunting. I bought my salt meat for beans and I followed them.
They took off at the red light at Hwy 90 and lost every thing. I picked it up and chased them to Carencro. Couldn’t catch them.
Went home and had plenty of groceries and two 110 quart ice chest. Igloo, pre Yeti times.

That 500lb capacity is probably not bouncing down the road.

Truth…it happens particularly when you have a light boat. I once hit a pothole while trailering my boat to go duck hunting. I watched in the rearview mirror as everything in the boat bounced up and flew out. Paddles, push pole, decoys, gas can…everything!

they also arent taking into account moment arms and the forces on it when you're bouncing down the road. 500 lbs sitting stationary in the driveway isnt 500 lbs when you hit a bump on the highway

We were on our way to Nashville through Louisville and maybe 30 miles south of Indianapolis. I-65.
