The Defense Department will become the largest shareholder in rare earth miner MP Materials after agreeing to buy $400 million of its preferred stock, the company said Thursday.

MP Materials said it will use the proceeds to invest in expanding its rare earths processing capabilities and its magnet production capacity.

Shares of MP Materials jumped more than 40% premarket on the news.

The Pentagon is buying a newly created class of preferred shares that are convertible into MP Materials’ common stock. It is also buying a warrant that allows it to purchase additional common stock in the rare earth miner.

It’s also partially owned by the Chinese government, which is inconceivable.

A Chinese company owns about 7%. They should be forced to divest those holdings.

Ive owned a big chunk of this stock for 5 years. Sold half of it when it ran up a month ago at damn near the top. Felt like a genius for the last 3 weeks as i watched it recede; too funny, that's how it goes.

Thanks for heads up! I've been holding since 2021 (small position) and it's gone nowhere. This is my cue to exit.

Yea, this stock was heavily shorted; probably short lived in the short term. Gotta think its a decent exit time if needed.

It will take government investment to re-shore most critical supply chains.

Open market will always buy from China because it’s the cheapest. Until they can’t when Xi moves on Taiwan. Then a mad rush of investment to finally expand domestic sources. Followed by years of pain that didn’t have to happen.

I wonder if Pelosi or Crenshaw were invested.

As part of the deal, the DoD will become the largest shareholder in MP Materials and guarantee a floor price of $110 per kilogram for the two most popular rare earths, nearly double of current market prices in China.

Price guarantees, financial backing, and Government support? And yall are wanting to sell???

this seems like a long term play if I've ever seen one.

"Why sell?" you ask.
I bought on a similar hypothesis that this was propped up by Pentagon contracts as sole US source etc.
Watched it climb past $56 in '22 and held out of greed and lack of oversight. I don't bother to follow my stock positions so need to divest anyway. Perhaps this time is different but I was happy to finally take a profit.

Chinese won't dump rare earth's all of a sudden. The environment took some major damage in their run up to re dominance. This time is different even democrats know it's foolish to rely on Chinese for this.
