There’s a newerish American watch company out of Detroit that I’ve been looking at (Shinola). Looking for recommendations on a new leather strap watch

Why does it have day of the week and month... but not the date? What am I missing?

I have an omega seamaster on a leather panerai style strap I had made from Poland.

Get compliments all the time, easy to dress to match.

It is a pointer date. It is showing the 4th. Look at the red quarter moon between 1 and 2 o'clock.

This is one of four watches I rotate wearing daily…

Yeah, it’s not the most fancy or prestigious. But my son bought this for me with his own money he worked for. To me, it’s priceless.

I am more of a bracelet and rubber strap fan, so there are only about 25 give or take on straps.

You can say that but Shinola can't without having the FTC so far up their arse they would burb buracracy.

I am not saying they are a bad watch, but they are not American-made.

They are built in Detroit but use global parts. The movement ebauche (kit of parts) is from Rhonda in Switzerland and assembled in Detroit. The Runwell case (at least a few years ago) was made in China (marked as such on the inside of the caseback). There is a likelihood that some other parts are Chinese as well, I am not suggesting this is good or bad just noting it can not be labeled or marketed American Made or Made in America a lesson they learned early. Watch nerds are some snitching mofos and take claims very seriously, often too seriously, but you aren't going to get much past them as a community. Shinola falls squarely in the if you like it buy it even if it is moderately "overpriced". No shame in that my boxes are filled with watches many watch nerds would say are overpriced by a lot more than a Shinola and you can find a contingent of watch nerds for every watch that declare them overpriced. The Canfield Chrono the OP posted is not my style but he would probably scoff at plenty of my watches.

There is one watch manufacturer who full well knows the requirements of US/American made to be willing to put it on their watch. That is JN Shapiro in L.A. He has gone to great pains and expense to make the most American made watch there is currently. As of this moment the only components not made in their shop is the crystal, gaskets, jewels, hairspring and mainspring. All but the mainspring is made in the US as it is made in Switzerland. They found manufacturers of the other components from similar industries in the US. The vibrate (form) the hairspring inhouse but had used Swiss drawn wire, they found a company to do that in the US but had to buy over 5 miles of wire enough to make 100,000 hairsprings which is likely more than the company will use during the life of Shapiro and he is a young guy. Gotta pay the cost to be the boss. At that point he felt comfortable using US made on the watch since a us made toy, tool or instrument with Japanese batteries is considered ok to use US/American made. His argument is the mainspring is analogous to a battery and is changed out over the life of the watch multiple times during service. Hopefully, he prevails if the FTC sends a letter before he works out that supply chain. So how much does it cost for a true American made watch? The JN Shapiro Resurgence costs a mere $70-85k, depending on the configuration. He deserves a lot of kudos for his unrelenting attempt to bring back true US watch making albeit at a super premium price.

In the end, wear a watch, any watch and it warms my cockles.

That Shapiro is a damn nice looking watch.

I mostly have 1940's, 50's and 60's watches, none expensive. Those wearing leather straps are a Hamilton tank, black-dial Laco, a sub-second Venus, a gold and white Patriot (generic Swiss watch), two sub-second Lancos, and a sub-second Vendaval.

The Vendaval is a mystery watch. There are a few around but nobody seems to know where they came from. Swiss movement but one European collector says the case looks Bulgarian (?). Suspicion is that a batch of them were made in WWII for German troops.

i just go with leather nato straps on a Citizen perpetual calendar and change them as the attire calls for it... i use the Citizen/nato strap combo for every day wear, though i typically don't use leather straps on the daily... typically nylon
