Gorilla ball or small ball
I much prefer gorilla ball with a hint of small ball in situational moments

This thread sucks
ETA: you ask people to pick one side or the other, but go on to pick both options

I think this season was very much Jay’s default style
i wouldn’t call us a small ball team.
I think Jay’s motto at Arizona was it’s a ball or it’s a line drive
Plate Discipline Drawing walks being agressive on the basepaths and punishing mistakes.
this year that was way more singles and doubles than HR but we still had guys hitting the long ball and it’s not like we sold out and tried to steal 200 bases and bunt every 0 out base runner over

Whichever style best suits the strengths of each year's team. Sign of a good coach is recognizing his team's strengths and deficiencies and adjusting style of play accordingly without being stubborn of change. Jay has embraced this.

The Jay Johnson style has been a “spectacle of great beauty.” As others have stated the 2 national titles in 3 years has been awesome.
As for gorilla ball, yes indeed I loved the hell out of it back in 1997 and 1998. It was so much fun!
But this thing with JJ is extremely fun too, so I’m a happy camper.

In the older park in Omaha the field was smaller so a team could win with the gorilla ball style. In the new bigger park it loses its advantage. I believe Jay said that he wants to build his future teams from the blueprint of this one (more defensive). Whatever style you use you have to build with what works best in Omaha, because that's where you play the big game.

I prefer a team that has excellent pitching backed up by superb defense, with versatile offense that is capable of executing whatever the situation requires. I most enjoy a game in which every pitch is important as opposed to a blowout.

The true sign of a well coached, well disciplined, competitive player is Jake Brown launching one 10 rows into the RF bleachers then later in the game bunting one down the 3B line to put a runner in scoring position for the next man.
This team was exciting because as a team, they were capable of executing at the plate.

Playing small ball is a tactic. It is a strategy that is employed at situational times in a game.
More often than not, home runs are happy accidents. No strategy required.

Jay has said it several times in booster club meetings: “We’ll do whatever’s necessary to give us the best chance to win.” That says it all.

Do you prefer a football game where the refs call a game by the rules or where they let players get away with stuff? OP has a dumb question.
Posted on 7/6/25 at 8:41 am to AlecRock23
Depends where we are playing
