MON 7/7/25: my understanding is that 82 dead, not sure adult/children ratio
Apparently, still 10 Mystic Camp children and one counselor missing.
I don’t know a bunch about it, but apparently the Guadalupe River down in TX flooded over night, and there are approx 20 young kids (summer campers) 5-10yos that are still missing when they were swept away with their cabins. Kids found in trees that were able to escape their floating cabins.
I have a family friends friend, etc who has friends with a kid that was there, safe though, so how I heard about it today.
So as we celebrate a wonderful nations birthday, let’s say a prayer that they are all found safe.

Same, hope they are all found safe and sound. This is horrible.

I didn't know about this. Prayers for the safety and return of all of these young people.

Yeah definitely not in the national news right now. Super sad. Hope they are found, but seems at this point the chances are getting slimmer by the hour.

This is tragic - these are 6-9 aged girls

Damn.
I have to say it’s impressive that they managed that. I’ve always been mind blown how capable a young kid can actually be when put in a tough situation. They’ll surprise you

Jeezus. Praying the girls found refuge.

Thats crazy. We’ve been trying to figure out how it caught so many of guard. It was like a dam broke type of quickness for them to wake up to water essentially drowning them.

2-3"/hr rainfall rates over an extended period of time. That rain fell in an area in the midst of an extended severe drought. Runoff was rapid due to the hard packed soil. Getting heavy rain on severely drought-stricken ground is always bad news. Soil isn't able to absorb the rain efficiently enough and runoff becomes a considerable issue.
This wasn't badly forecast. Mid-range forecasts called for the potential of localized areas seeing 10"+ of rain. There just wasn't high confidence on where that heaviest rain would set up.
This was caused by the remnants of tropical storm Barry interacting with a shortwave trough working it's way through the region. That trough was slow moving, and the flow from it was directly off the Gulf, pumping moisture into the system. Unfortunately, the heaviest rains fell over one of the worst possible places in the region.
Happening at night didn't help. There weren't as many eyes on the rapidly rising water, as most people were asleep. This really was one of the nightmare scenarios.

Was on a family campout there about 60 years ago and ranger came up and warned everybody to vacate the area - flood coming. Decamped in record time and headed out just as the river was flooding the area.
It is a beautiful area when the river stays in its banks.

shite can happen quick in that part of the Plateau.

Those IG videos are terrible. I go there annually and have never witnessed anything remotely like it. Flood stages raising that quickly is extremely rare.
