Instead, their DNA profile puts them closer to Sicilian/Aegean (Greek) in genetic make-up by the time of the Punic Wars between Ancient Rome and the Phoenicians. In short, Hannibal probably didn't look like Denzel Washington.

This study was led by Brown University here in the United States and was published in Nature back during the month of May.

quote:

The researchers’ DNA samples come mostly from the bones of people who lived in the second half of the Punic empire’s history, between the sixth and second centuries B.C. The 210 samples came from 14 Punic settlements across the Levant, North Africa, Iberia, Sicily, Sardinia, Algeria and the Balearic island Ibiza.

There’s ample evidence that these people practiced Levantine customs, built Levantine-style structures and spoke the Levantine-derived Punic language, van Dommelen said. Yet according to the DNA analysis, almost none of them had any trace of Levantine ancestry. Instead, the study found, their genetic profiles looked most like those of prehistoric inhabitants of Sicily and the Aegean. Some of them also showed varying degrees of North African ancestry, especially those who died after 400 B.C., reflecting the growing influence of Carthage in the Mediterranean.

I'm a little shocked there isn't much Semeric but I'd need to go research the Phoenician origins

Anyone who thought Carthage was West African is trying too hard

The Levant.

This is an area of the world that includes Lebanon, Jordan, Syria, Israel, Syria, and Cyprus. This is where most people believe the Phoenicians originated from.

The “Levant” refers to the eastern coast of the Mediterranean and the lands immediately to the East, including Iraq. The “core” of the Levant is what’s traditionally referred to as “The Holy Land,” but some people take it further to include Turkey and Egypt. If you imagine that backward C formed by the eastern edge of the Mediterranean… that’s the broadest definition of the Levant.

Tell me what? That Sicily is a genetic melting pot? I think anyone with a brain knows that considering where it's at on the map. For example, the city of Palermo on the island of Sicily is the most conquered city on the planet. When you factor in how many times that island has been invaded throughout history, there is obviously going to be a lot of variety in the gene pool.

If you know its a melting pot why are you bringing up one specific guy like hannibal? He couldve been as pale as a British islander or as dark as Denzel, most likely he was somewhere in the middle.

The romans referred to the carthagians as "dark skinned" so id assume that means closer to modern Portuguese for the majority.

Because I knew people like you would be in this thread. People who are contrarian and argumentative help pass the time while I'm taking a shite.

Ah. Well in case you are interested they did announce yesterday that they had sequenced an Egyptians DNA from around 3K BC. About 80 percent of the man's genome is linked to lineages in North Africa, while the remaining 20 percent is linked to lineages in West Asia.

It is. No one thinks Hannibal looked like someone from the depths of the interior of Africa. People desperately want to use new information to revise history a bit to say this or that people were black/more black or this or that people were white/more white.
