So they are burying fiber optic cables on my street. I am glad to finally have access to fiber, but they have dug a big 4 foot deep trench and ruined my front yard. They are still working, so I guess I will see how well they repair it before I bitch too much.

But here's the thing. I am not a baller like you guys in your gated communities with private security, personal ski slopes, and butlers and maids. I am trashy and live in a hood with above ground power/cable/phone lines. So I must ask WHY are they burying fiber when I have overhead service already? Seems to me it would be much easier just to run it over head.

In fact a few months ago they were on other side of street running fiber on the poles, but for some reason they want to bury it on this side of street. (I'm assuming maybe the phone company doesn't have rights to the poles on my side of street?). But even if that's true couldn't they just run it overhead across the street?

Any baws here have experience with this? It just seems to be a big waste of money for them to go through this trouble of burying it when the neighborhood is all overhead already.

You’ll love it and forget your bitchin within a year
They can do it without your consent, so you might as well embrace it

Fiber is awesome btw

AT&T here in Zachary did the same thing to my yard and it never quite fully recovered.

I hope the guys who did mine are the exception and not the rule but I have my doubts

Most internet providers bury their fiber cable so they don't have to pay an annual fee per pole to the utility company that owns the poles.

AI says it could be as high as $20.60 per pole per year.

Take lots of pictures. Do you have any before they dug it up?
Pictures keeps them honest.

Private property, really? I can understand easements but private property without consent or warning? Do we live in Beirut?

Fiber was run in my neighborhood last year. They tore up the R.O.W., then put sod down in the R.O.W. where they dug to run fiber.

Decent chance you have the same situation. Have a professional conversation with the guy over the crew, and be nice to the workers... they're just doing their job. Industry standard is to put the disturbed area back "as good or better."

If you live in the hood there is nothing you can do. If you live in a nice suburb or enclave, they may have laws stating that your yard must be restored to 100% original condition and will enforce that.

Wait until a second company comes up and does it again. Happened at my place. The first company laid their line through horizontal boring but their machine left a big ole puddle of hydraulic fluid in my driveway that they just threw some dirt over.

Within a yr, a second company came and dug a coffin sized trench every 15ft by hand. I vowed never to utilize them but $50/mo savings and faster speeds eventually changed my mind.

Easement/servitude. Nothing you can do about it. Bring the workers cold water and chat them up. Make friends with them so they will do their best putting it all back together.

Id imagine maint is much, much cheaper to bury it, and they have access. They did ours, and I just went out and brought em gatorade while others were hollering at em. They had sod out to my yard before they were finished, it was St Aug in my Zoysia, but better than dirt I figure. The damage was pretty minimal. And we already had ATT, this was another company I will never use. Does every company that wants to run fiber have to run their own, cause that would suck if 4-5 of em had to put the panels in my yard.

IMO, this is the odd part. I had spoken with 3 different fiber companies about getting fiber to my office, and all 3 (including AT&T) talked about how they insist on burying the fiber to avoid the pole lease payments, and it helps minimize outages. They don't have to deal with trees knocking out lines, Entergy knocking out their lines when replacing a pole, cars taking out the poles (4 times in 9 years at this location).

The company I ultimately went with maintained internet connection in my area during/after Ida; just needed a generator to run the modems.

I’m not sure why they aren’t boring instead of digging. Much less disturbance
