More than 9000 Pacific Islanders live in this NWA city (almost 11% of the population). Why though?

Arkansas baseball players?

A quick Google says
quote:
The high concentration of Marshallese people in Springdale, Arkansas, is primarily due to economic opportunities in the poultry industry, particularly at Tyson Foods, and the subsequent spread of information about these opportunities to their homeland. This migration began in the 1980s and has continued, making Springdale the largest continental US population of Marshallese people.

Should produce some big offensive linemen for the Razorbacks

Great city and very close to U of A. My dad is from there and I spent many summers there. This city has exploded since the 1970s and has access to great hiking. Cool location.

1788 The Marshall Islands are first “discovered” by Europeans. They are named after the Royal Navy Captain of the ship that first sighted them John William Marshall.
His vessel was carrying a load of prisoners headed from Great Britain to New South Wales for exile there, some destined to eventually spawn generations of Australians.
So a happy ending to this thread.

It’s not new either. The Marshallese have been well represented in NWA for 25+ years.

Your resident Springdale, AR TD poster checking in here. I find the whole situation fascinating. My wife (no pics) works in healthcare and there are some unique challenges with the Marshallese population due to their cultural beliefs, language, etc. There’s also a little bit more to the story of how they ended up here -
quote:
Following World War II, the United States held onto the Marshall Islands after defeating the Japanese and ending their occupation of the north, central archipelago. Beginning in 1946 the U.S. military commenced 12 years of nuclear testing, which irradiated the atolls and resulted in forced relocations, biological, ecological, and cultural consequences that the Marshallese community continues to endure today. The Republic of the Marshall Islands (R.M.I.) became self-governing in 1979. Four years later the U.S. and R.M.I. signed the Compact of Free Association. The agreement allows Marshallese to travel freely between the two countries, prevents the Marshallese from taking further legal action against the U.S. for damages incurred as a result of nuclear testing, and made provisions for the continued operation of the U.S. missile test site on Kwajalein Atoll.

Samoan Walton would approve.

I believe Marshallese is the second most spoken foreign language by Tyson employees outside of Spanish.
