Player autograph signings

Son wanted to go get Bear's autograph at Hooters in Houma yesterday. Waited in line for almost 2 hours in the heat/humidity. All he was doing was signing, and if you asked he would look up to snap a pic. No interaction, personalization or anything like that. Not blaming this on Bear, I honestly felt bad for him even though I know he was being paid for the appearance.
These things are set up to treat the player like a zoo attraction while many "fans'' are probably left with a bad taste in their mouth about the lack of interaction.
Told my son we won't do this again and if he wants autographs we will get them at games.

And if the players spend more time with each fan, then your wait time increases to 3 hours or more, and we have threads about how waiting 4 hours for an autograph is ridiculous and that people were spending far too long chatting with the players.
If you were going to get an autograph, then it sounds like you succeeded.

Went to a Supermotocross event in B’ham, Al. It was a terrific venue. If you waited in line to get a signed poster, the rider would sign as quickly as possible, and if you wanted a photo, he would look up, crack a smile, and grab the next poster to sign. It was very robotic to get as many done as possible in short time frames, but the riders still looked like they genuinely liked being there and doing that.

Obviously, they told him to keep interaction at minimum to avoid huge delays

I know that. You had to donate to a food bank as well so it was a good cause. I'm just saying the player is set up to ignore people when you have a signing like this, especially right after a natty where people who normally wouldn't be there will show up to show how big of a "fan" they are.

it is a signing, not a meet and greet or hangout

The amount of adults there without a child was also kind of offputting.

I can understand where you're coming from, especially with your son being there. But, with a two-hour long line of folks there, likely all feeling the same as you, I can imagine it's hard for the players when it does come to time management and making sure folks aren't outside for hours on end.

This goes to show you that people will complain about anything and everything these days.

I’ll just never understand this sentiment. I have a huge collection of professional and college athletic memorabilia some that I got as a child, some I bought, and some I went to signings for. Theres no age limit to who can be a fan and want a piece of history. And I’m sure some are there just to get the auto and sell on the bay but there’s nothing off putting about someone getting a signature for their personal collection.

I don't particularly care, like I said I mostly felt bad for Jones. It was miserable outside but was there for my son.
I told him before we got there that if he got anything besides an autograph and a picture he would be lucky, and he was ok with that.
I heard grumblings from some folks that "he'll only sign one thing per person" and "he didn't look up". Those were from the adults there without kids for the most part.

The problem isn’t that adults are looking for autographs, it’s that there is always a strong contingent of males showing up with 7-10 pieces of memorabilia looking to get signed so that they can put it up for sale. They don’t care if they have to box out someone’s kid who is genuinely looking to just have a moment with a player.

I’m sure players don’t care as much as these types of events since they’re being paid to be there. You’re more likely to get a genuine reaction from players when kids are asking for autographs right along side the field or outside the locker room.

Bingo. Same people who will fight a kid for a foul ball at a game.
Saw people with handfulls of shite they wanted signed. Heard people complain that he wouldn't sign everything. I'm sure this is normal at these things, I had just never seen it.

I see you read my first sentence and none after that haha. I acknowledged exactly what you said. Of course there’s always people who are going to try and profit especially if it’s a free signing, those EBay guys are going to come out. But to say it like he did it comes across differently, never mentioned about bringing multiple items of memorabilia to sign, just about adults being there at a signing being off putting with no reasoning behind. He then clarified down thread that they said he only signed one thing or didn’t look up while there.

This had been our experience previously. He just never got JJ's so he wanted to take what was probably going to be his last shot at Hooters
ETA: I did buy a Jones jersey for him to get signed while there, so hopefully he got some NIL $ off of it

Go to a MLB game and get there early (like batting practice early). You will be shocked at the grown arse adults with soft sided coolers holding various pieces of memorabilia, wearing about 15 pens on a lanyard, jorts, and sandals with socks, standing by the dugouts clamoring for certain players to come over and sign something. It's like 3 levels past Disney adults and LARPers.

Imagine a Warren Morris autograph signing and how long the line would be and would take to get an autograph. People wanting to tell him where they were, and what their reaction was, etc.

Just seeing this so I wanted to respond. It most certainly was a turn and burn type of event. You want to maximize the donations as well as how many fans get to have something signed. Photographs are a huge bottle neck when you are having to turn hundreds of people away. He had a flight to catch so he was going to have to leave immediately.
