LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — GE Appliances announced a nearly half-billion-dollar project Thursday that it says will create 800 new jobs and shift production of clothes washers from China to its massive manufacturing complex in Kentucky.

The $490 million investment positions the Kentucky home appliances company to rank as the biggest U.S. manufacturer of washing machines, it said.

Fun Fact: After WWII, GE had a contract to develop one of the first generations of guided, surface-to-air missiles.

The Hermes project was their creation.

Fun Fact: After WWII

Look at Ball, the mason jar company. They went from glass jars, to coke cans, to building the guidance antennas for our nukes.

I worked for Neutron Jack, my first job after graduation. It was certainly memorable.

The all important question is WHEN?

I know it’s hard to determine with this large of an investment, but I hate having the feeling that these companies just announce an investment, say it’ll take 10 years and then quietly backtrack once they are no longer pressured.

I’d love to be proven wrong of course.

500 million seems low.

GE Appliance Park has been in Louisville for ages. If you owned a GE appliance in a post WW II world, odds are good it came from there.

Fun Fact:

Between Wright Patterson and the GE engine plant on the way exiting Cincinnati it was a sight to see. Not sure about now, but at one time it was so big, GE plant had its own zip code.
