The media was doing everything they could to make them the media darling underdog that the whole country was behind. It made CC's shtick of "us vs the world" and aggressive demeanor seem really forced.

Hell the announcers by talking about the umps being too quick in the ejection gave the coach every opportunity to come out "own it" and truly look like a victim of the moment.

At every opportunity CC and particularly their coach were deliberately assholes when they could have leaned into a completely different storyline that the media was trying so hard allow them to fit.

The us against the world stuff doesn't really work when you've won a title in recent memory

There was even a ‘fist bump’ discussion between the announcers when CC threatened late in the game with a baserunner.

CC tried to be a poor man's version of Tennessee with their cockiness from top to bottom. Vitello is a douche, but he knows when to tone it down and when to turn it on. Coastal had zero off switch.

They walked through some decent teams along the way, but their half of the bracket didn't have the studs that the other side had. They aren't standing in the finals if Arkansas was on their side of the bracket, and maybe not even UCLA.

If you didn't think the media was going to back the underdog story going into that game then you don't live in reality.

Also, announcers will always celebrate when a team starts to come from behind no matter the team. Its part of what they are paid to do. Generate excitement around the event they are announcing.

I definitely remember them talking about a fist pump, but I believe it was when a video review about whether or not the CC batter was hit with a pitch came back as confirmed.

I was royally pissed about both.

Arkansas against Coastal would be close. UCLA would go 0-2 against CCU.

They really ran with the 26 game win streak like it was the most awesome thing ever to happen in sports. It was the Sunbelt. Southern Miss was on an 18 game winning streak in the Sunbelt until Coastal beat them 7-5 in the Sunbelt tournament final.

LSU had a 23 game win streak In 08 leading into supers. UC Irvine with their bush-league tactics ended the streak on a bad call by the officiating crew.

No one will remember their streak

No they didn’t

Coastal wasn’t at all comparable to any recent Tennessee baseball team and Schnall isn’t similar to Vitello.

They also put on a gimmick astronaut helmet when they hit a home run.

It was so stupid that the TV cameras largely ignored it, but I saw it on a highlight reel.

There was an ESPN article written on 21 June 2025 that described LSU as the Death Star and Coastal as The Rebellion.

Enough said.

ESPN hype train was real until LSU derailed their asses.

HYPE: I hadn't seen CC before we played them. But all I heard was that they basically had "no weaknesses". Previews said they were a confident Cinderella on a record-setting win-streak, had great pitching, great defense, timely bats & aggressive base-running. They said CC manufactures walks by leaning into pitches. They said they were not HR-hitters, but that wouldn't matter in a big park anyway. The catcher Bodine & pitcher Morrison were supposed to be the stars. Sounded challenging.

REALITY: Turns out, they were just assholes, not confident, and now, on a two-game losing-streak. One Ace was formidable, the other was shite. Their SS is about the only one that made any decent defensive plays. Their bats stranded too many runners. IIRC, they only stole two bases in two games, and had a crucial fail at a 3rd. LSU, ironically, was the one that was ruled to have leaned into a pitch. CC actually got the only two HRs of the series. Bodine did not impress with his glove or bat, and Morrison, again, was shite. They were not even as challenging as Little Rock.

I'm simply talking in terms of the entire douchebag schtick. Not comparing them talent wise.

And if there is one other coach you would expect to be tossed in the first for crying about balls and strikes, then have other coaches tossed with him, is Vitello not the first person who comes to mind as the likely candidate?

This! It was more about getting it right than it was about CC trying to make a comeback.

You also have to keep in mind these guys love the sport and are paid to call the games. Regardless of who they really wanted to win it all; they all wanted a G3.

Less cockiness and more humility being in that situation would have won a lot of fans, win or lose. The way they presented themselves before and after it all, lost many fans around the country that may have wanted to like them. They were their own worst enemy, with poor leadership. Just mho
