Jurassic World Rebirth (Now with Spoilers)

ORIGINAL SPOILER-FREE PORTION
Just got out and for a JP movie and/or this type of movie, it was pretty good. They went in somewhat of a new direction (a little more horror and adult) and completely broke away from the new trilogy (in a good way). Some homages and some "killing" of overdone concepts.
Definitely a movie, not a film. Jurassic Park is a film, and the rest are nowhere close. This may be the best JP sequel (which is more a statement of the quality of the sequels more than this movie alone). It's certainly in the tier with JP2 and Lost World. Apex JP sequences, but the movie doesn't quite add up to be bigger than the sum of its parts.
The good: This movie has legit maybe the best 3-4 sequences outside of the original other than maybe the TRex introduction in JP2. There are a handful of incredibly well done, exciting/thrilling scenes. Acting is very good, which isn't shocking considering the talent.
The bad: It's a typical movie of this type with lots of CGI, over-plotting, too many characters, etc. Also it's a JP movie so they have to shoe-horn in young kids in danger (with a group of characters with obvious plot armor). Clearly you have to just accept some shite (like cars/batteries working after sitting 15 years) and there are plot holes and characters do stupid shite. For this type of movie it's within the acceptable range, but it's there.
For a mindless/exciting summer popcorn flick, definitely recommended. This movie may be too intense for younger kids.
WARNING SPOILERS BELOW
Updated Spoiler Portion: So the thing about the movie that made me chuckle the most was referenced in the OG portion of the review, which was the "killing off" of old portions of the franchise. I mean they LITERALLY killed off all the dinosaurs in the regular world from the outset to make it clear it wasn't those shitty old Pratt World movies.
Then the most underrated scene with this theme was the raptor one. They movie went on and on and you forgot about the raptors, then the annoying bf went to pee and it was like "oh shite here we go" then BOOM. Raptors dead never to be referenced again. I took that as a clear sign they wanted to let everyone know the raptor thing was way overdone for 6 movies and we're going in a different direction. I felt it was cheeky but legit funny.
There were also clear homages, like the convenience store scene throwing back to the original kitchen scene. I know there were a couple others I just can't think of them now. The "omg dinosaurs" awe scene was complete cringe, though.
Also, when I referenced "too many characters" and the "ones with plot armor" I was clearly talking about the family, which I'm sure was studio influence (although Edwards does have a habit of trying to mix in too much and show the impact of "real people" on these grand, obscene scenarios, so I may be wrong). This also shoe-horned in the merchandise with the cute small dino.
HOWEVER, the original Mosasaur scene and the T-Rex scene were incredible so the family wasn't completely useless. Like I said, this movie is a bunch of popcorn movie fluff built around some incredible scenes, which is what you want out of a JP sequel/big summer popcorn movie.
I'm convinced that Mahershala Ali's character living was a reshoot after early audience screenings got upset. That was BAD. They clearly wanted to go a little darker but were pulled back.
The "omg I hate corporations too!" subplot was bad. If they were going to set that up, and SarJo was sticking around, having it develop over a couple of movies would have been better. Like in this movie she loses her friends but gets the money. Somehow that's not enough and they convince her in 2, and then she realizes it, and in 3 she turns on the dino corporation. That is a trilogy outline that works better than having her flip so easily in movie 1.

Would this be a fun date movie? Wife and I enjoy all of the Jurassic franchise movies even the bad ones, well maybe I just answered my own question.

I got the tickets tonight as a surprise for my wife who said a few weeks ago that she wanted to see it.
When I saw the thread on here about the secret showing, I got them.

There is a Jurassic Park movie releasing this weekend?
fricking oof.
fricking oof.

One of the big missing pieces of the JW films are scenes like the Raptors in the kitchen scene or the tall grass scene. It's only of my biggest criticisms of the JW saga. Any scenes like those in it, is the suspense back?

I didn't know there were early screenings. Is this just for today?

Several.
Like 3 in the water alone

Some people rate 2 highly. I didn't want to cause a ruckus about it, by dismissing it (it's not rated well by me)

I disagree. This movie was holy moly terrible. There was no suspense, all the characters you know will live, live, all the obvious ones who will die, die. The dinosaurs looked ridiculous. Scarlet Johansson’s character’s motivation for going to the island was purely for money which felt like breaking the fourth wall and a nod to audience to say that Scarlet is only in this for the money. It was on par with the last Jurassic World sequel which is to say, it’s silly, it’s convoluted, it’s soulless and it’s pointless. There isn’t really a plot, it was just a mess of a movie. And for some reason there’s a family thrown in there as well. It’s just bad. Don’t waste your money on this cash grab.

Out of curiosity, I know you said this one takes the second position, but how would you rank every feature in the JP franchise?

So where does this exist in the JP tineline?

Jurassic Park
Jurassic World
This one
JP2
JP3
Fallen Kingdom
Dominion
There should be more space between the original and the next tier, but the objects in a thread are further than they appear.

In terms of temporal placement, it's in the same universe and years after Dominion, but they kind of neuter the second trilogy and where it ended for any future JP projects in that universe.

How is this not like basically every other Jurassic Park movie?
There's one obvious person who should have died and I will bet 100 SFP bucks that was changed due to audience testing and reshoots.

Again, this is a Jurassic Park sequel.

There isn’t really a plot,
People get hired to steal something from dino island, run into problems, try to still complete mission and get home.
It's actually over-plotted, with the save the world message that randomly gets dropped in, the family, and other things that I won't spoil.

I covered this directly in OP

on this cash grab.
Sir, this is a Jurassic Park sequel. This is not kino and my OP makes that clear.
I wrote and OP based around the expectations of a JP sequel and you're letting everyone know that it's not Dune or Andor or something. Again, this is a movie, not a film, This isn't a Tarkovsky-esque mediation on existence or a social satire by Renoir. This is a heist-style film with dinosaurs.

I would put it on par with the first Jurassic World movie. I had a good time.

I enjoyed it, but like you've already said, it's not perfect. It's a Jurassic Park sequel; nothing more, nothing less. If you go in expecting a masterpiece or some new really inventive twist, you'll be pretty disappointed.
To me it was a very slow start and even had me thinking 'Aren't there supposed to be dinosaurs in this movie?'. The plot is very predictable. As soon as the characters are all introduced, you can guess (with high accuracy) who will live and die. Also the character development was very clunky and forced. It was almost like they treated the characters as existed characters that we needed an update on rather than newly introduced characters to the franchise.
I did enjoy how the writers basically just said "Oh yea, what happened in Dominion, just forget that. We recognize that movie was hot garbage and are attempting to right that wrong."

Saw with the secret screening last evening as well
Was what I hoped it would be, summer pop corn flick that was entertaining
Of course it wasn’t as good as the original, you simply can’t top that story
Had jump scare parts like the original and had my kids on the edge of their seats at certain points etc

Yeah I referenced that in OP. They did something similar with another franchise icon that made me laugh.
