Mid 50's couple throwing a tent in the SUV and road tripping through Colorado.
The idea is to see the Rockies and get back to nature for a week.

when are you going and where are you driving from? I am a big fan of SW Co in the summer…durango, silverton, ouray, crested butte , gunnison, etc.

This!
Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park needs to be seen, pics do not do it justice.
Durango to Silverton Narrow Gauge Train is amazing.
Silverton is my preferred campsite here, the dirt roads to the passes are so amazing.
Then make sure to get reservations at Far View Lodge in Mesa Verde National Park. It’s worth it to stay there instead of the campground because it saves you 45 minutes of driving early in the morning and you get to visit things with almost no one there in the morning. Get your cliff dwelling tours as soon as they release two weeks in advance on rec dot gov.

What to see/do here has been beat to death so you can search, I came in to say I hope you have campsites reserved or have plans for dispersed. Covid moved almost all the designated spots to reservation only and most of the well-known dispersed spots are packed all summer long with Midwest hippies living there.
I hate the reservation system, but no one asked my opinion before making it so. One thing we do is a site must be occupied on its first night of the reservation, so we ride around looking for no shows then go ask the host if we can take their spot. Some wont let you take it until the second night. Bring a check book or cash to pay.

Any recs on places to stay in Durango and Ouray?
Posted on 6/23/25 at 4:09 pm to nolaTiger24
We really enjoyed the Twin Peaks Lodge in Ouray. Convenient to everything and having the hot springs on site was really nice.
We have stayed at a couple of hotels in Durango, but none were great.
Hit up 11th street station. Good food, beers and sometimes music.

I usually camp or stay in a RV when there. I haven't stayed a night in Durango, but they have chain hotels there. It's too close to Mesa Verde, so I always choose to stay in the campground or Far View Lodge once I get past Silverton.
There are a good bit of USFS campgrounds in the area.
RV wise
4J+1+1 is the campground I usually stay at in Ouray. It's ok.
I really like staying at Silverton Lakes South Campground for easy access to the bars and restaurants in Silverton. They have a couple of really awesome looking old hotels in Silverton as well. I prefer Silverton over Ouray and Durango.
