Sun Belt & Louisiana Tech Conference Realignment: Why The Bulldogs Could Be Departing CUSA

Louisiana Tech could become another team that’s involved in recent conference realignment.

La Tech could be looking at an invite from the Sun Belt in the near future, according to a report from ESPN, if Texas State were to leave for the Pac-12. That would make sense for the Bulldogs, certainly, but the Sun Belt will have plenty of options if Texas State does leave.

quote:

Though nothing is finalized, the Sun Belt is already preparing for Texas State to leave and is looking at Louisiana Tech as a potential addition.

The Sun Belt has strongly considered programs that would make sense geographically, not just necessarily ones that have performed well on the field. The league would also see La Tech’s success in baseball and softball as bonuses as well.

Louisiana Tech, if it went to the Sun Belt, would be near other SBC teams like Louisiana, ULM, and Southern Miss.

quote:

Many would likely see Western Kentucky and Liberty as potential targets for the Sun Belt over Louisiana Tech strictly because of football success.

La Tech hasn’t enjoyed a winning season since 2019. Western Kentucky, meanwhile, has appeared in a bowl game in every season except for one going back to 2014. Liberty has appeared in six straight bowl games, winning Conference USA and appearing in the Fiesta Bowl in 2023.

But as has been the case with pretty much all conference realignment, success on the football field is only a part of the equation. And according to ESPN, the Sun Belt would prefer Louisiana Tech over those two schools right now.

Louisiana Tech would need to pay two years worth of revenue distribution and buy back its grant of rights to leave CUSA for the Sun Belt. For La Tech to leave in 2026, ESPN reported the cost could be more than $5 million.

quote:

Teams in the Sun Belt receive about $7 million per year thanks to its media deal with ESPN, which ends in 2031.

Conference USA agreed to a five-year media rights deal that began during the 2023 football season with ESPN and CBS. There’s an option for a sixth year as well, which would be for the 2028-29 academic year. Teams were scheduled to be paid about $750,000 per year on average.

They’ll decline the offer and be left without a conference.

Is La Tech still afraid of playing ULM?

It makes all the sense in the world to have Tech and ULM play every season.

always

To put into prospective how scared tech is to be seen as less than us. My junior and senior year of xc we ran a meet there. Nothing major, 4 team meet I think. Both years we won the meet. Both years the write up on their site failed to acknowledge we were even there while acknowledging the other teams in the meet that they beat.

One of my years we ran at the Northwestern State meet. On their golf course. Usually about 7-8 programs in the meet. LA Tech included.

So we start the race, about half a mile in, some dude dressed in LA Tech stuff yelling “Cajuns in the back where they belong!” The team we had that season would typically start in a group and try to run negative splits. He followed the race best he could on the golf course yelling shite at us every chance he could.

During the last 400m, there was just some Kenyan from NW State in front of me whom I knew I wouldn’t catch to win, but I looked back and saw our crew right behind me. The same dude was on the side in the final stretch, so I smiled at him and gave him two middle fingers.

We won the meet, but no lie, the loser went complain to the race officials to disqualify me because of my gestures to him. At a freaking cross country meet of all things. Holy shite.

LaTech should be allowed to join if they rebrand to Louisiana Tech at Ruston and have another 4-year university rebrand with them.

Thems the rules baw.

Nah…I’m good. I’m one of the few hardcore Cajuns fans who would be ok with y’all returning, as I love the hatred festering annually.

But hopefully LA Tech’s leadership behaves differently this time in the Belt than last time.

Daddy might be coming home! Hopefully the UL-X twins have been behaving while we were away on an extended road trip.

lol…yall sure hold some major grudges against people that are long gone from Tech. Honestly, joining the SBC would bring back some great regional rivalries but let’s not pretend the SBC is an amazing conference. Whether Tech joins SBC or not, it really doesn’t matter when it comes down to the g5.

I’d actually welcome it too. It’d be good for Nela even though we’d likely get our poo pushed in more often than not.
