The defense of the Red Sox front office re: Devers makes no sense

Just because you sign a player to a big (though still below market) contract, that doesn’t free you from the responsibility of communicating what the plan is and how you’re going to support the player in making major position changes suddenly and unexpectedly.
Why would you tell the guy all offseason that, despite signing Bregman, he was still going to play 3rd only to completely reverse course once camp started?
Why would you then tell the guy he would be DH all year and to throw his glove away then say actually never mind we had an injury go play first?
Why is the owner bitching about having to rearrange his schedule to fly to Kansas City to deal with a player issue? You own the team this is going to happen. If you want to be pissed at someone be pissed at your GM for his monumental failure to get everyone on the same page. Jerk off GM then trades him, only getting back refilling the coke machine in return because his feelings were hurt. They are a joke.

Plans change at a company. The company pays you to do what is needed. The owner is paying him to do a job, not to have to come babysit his emotions.

It appears they communicated with him very poorly. Committing that amount of money should also buy you a bit of flexibility though, especially when there’s an injury. I see both parties at fault.

forget emotions you’re asking him to do something he can’t do and you’re not even giving him the support to do it.

I agree with the both parties but i generally have low expectations for players given theyre nearly always looking out for themselves. As far as GMs...they should be thinking of the team...the owner/GM didnt consider Devers wasnt going to move just because.
If theres supposed to be flexibility on his behalf then im sure his contract would have laid out the terms of that flexibility. This should be a lesson to every owner giving away these mega deals that stretch out a decade or more.

Sure, tell him in December we’re trying to win so we brought in the best player we could to do that. We’re going to cross train you at first and Bregman at second.
Odds are one of them (or someone else in the infield) is going to get hurt, which is exactly what happen, so prepare for that in advance.

That’s fair I guess. Part of the issue with the communication I think is that they didn’t expect Bregman’s market to develop the way it did, and they brought him in a couple weeks before spring training (not December like you’re saying). So they didn’t expect to have to have that conversation and then handled it very poorly when they did
My opinion is they should have committed to moving Devers off third last offseason regardless because he’s out of shape and shown zero desire or ability to get better at the position. But that’s beside the point
He can be and would probably be pretty good there. Players, even star players, change position all the time

I guess what it really boils down to for me is at times it feels like owners and GMs, and this is in all sports, think they’re playing Madden or MLB the Show and the players are just NPC avatars they move around.
When in reality these are professional athletes who have spent years learning their particular craft and it’s not as easy as just saying well just go play first, it’s a huge thing to do for the first time at this stage. As an organization you need to understand that and go to the player and express to him hey we needed to make this move, here’s our plan for you, here is how we’re going to help you.
And for the Red Sox specifically, the at they have now fricked up their situation with their best player twice in 5 years really speaks poorly of how the organization is structured and their culture.

You don’t think there was any communication between management and Devers? Don’t be that naive.

from everything we’ve seen the team’s attitude has been well were playing you all this money go shag some balls at first.
to which i would say to them, you invested all this money into the player, doesn’t it behoove you to have management actually, you know, manage the player and the situation to a positive outcome?
if you’re in a situation where the relationship is so bad you have to trade your best player for basically nothing, that’s an organizational failure.

You could have predicted this the minute Devers started speaking out after the Bregman acquisition.

I agree but I’m not sure this is an apples to apples comparison with Devers. Trading away Betts? Sure.
They brought in a better all around 3B in Bregman on a better deal. Asked Devers to play 1B. He said no and threw a fit. They probably could have gotten more for him but maybe not? It might be most of the league views him as a mid asset despite his amazing bat.

It's below market now, but Devers isn't exactly big on "my body is a temple". I wouldn't have traded Devers, and hate management, but there is almost no way he ages well and that contract will become pretty meh on the back end.

This is not the A-Rod and Jeter situation. Devers is one of the worst defensive third basemen in league history. He also has been pretty dog shite about keeping up with his body, and it was a matter of when not if he got moved off the bag. He made absolutely zero effort to improve his defense while getting paid handsomely, which is a gigantic problem in of itself.
Again, I don't want him leaving the team, and don't think management is in the right, but Devers isn't some angel here and contributed a lot to his own problems.
