PGA Tour's Monahan to step down in 2026 as Rolapp takes over

PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan will step down at the end of his contract in 2026 and will transition his day-to-day responsibilities of running the circuit to new CEO Brian Rolapp, the tour said in a statement Tuesday.
In the least shocking news of the day, the worst commissioner in the history of professional sports, outside of Bud Selig, has been replaced. Rolapp will start his role this summer but Monahan won’t officially be gone until 2026. Total clown of a commissioner. Maybe a LIV deal can get done now under a hopefully competent commissioner.

Dude is garbage.
Absolute prick. Forced rory to be the face of the tour and defend it against LIV then announces a merger without telling him or any other players.
And they pay him millions of dollars.

meh, Rory is a grown man. I give him full credit for filling that role, but I don't see how he was forced.
Jay's handling of the proposed merger was shitty, no doubt.

He's Mormon, so maybe there won't be BLM fists or pride flags pained on the greens, but he's coming from the NFL, so who knows?

What is the incentive for the PGA to close a deal now? LIV will continue in the background while the contracts come up for renewal for the handful of players the PGA tour would want back. Maybe LIV will launch another attack to try to steal some stars, but I doubt it. PGA tour ratings are doing well without the guys on LIV.

New PGA commish should unify USGA, Augusta National, R&A ect to perma ban all LIV from majors.

Money. Boatloads of money.
It honestly doesn’t bother me all that much the way things are now. Sure I’d like to see Bryson and Rahm play the other guys more often but they made a choice, I don’t feel bad for them not being allowed to play in PGA Tour events.
I do think LIV didn’t throw a ton of money at any star players this year because they probably assumed they’d be getting a deal done with the Tour. If they continue to not get a deal done I can easily see LIV throwing more crazy money at other top players. Bryson has already hinted he’s resigning with LIV so it’s not like LIV is going anywhere and they still have endless money to play around with.

How do the LIV payments work?
They pay guaranteed money upfront and then also have tournament winnings?
And the PGA only gives out tournament winnings?
As long as the PGA doesn’t adopt any LIV rules like shorts, music, shotgun starts, etc…

from the Saudis, right? But then you have to cede some control to them.

I believe the PGA now offers guaranteed money or a minimum salary. Seems like thats one of the very few ways in which LIV actually "changed pro golf".

Monahan had a competitor come into the marketplace with unlimited funds and he has managed to keep the pga tour not only stable, but increased money, ratings, and didn’t cede power to the Saudis
“Worst commissioner ever”
OP in his feelings

Hmm, wonder who is partially responsible they had a competitor in the first place

Correct. Saudis would get a seat at the table.

Not really sure if the guaranteed money was upfront or spread out for some. But yes you have individual tournament winning and team tournament winnings on top. Also some players have ownership in the teams so I’m sure they’re getting more than others. If those teams are profitable I don’t know. Bryson says they are. I don’t really see how they are bringing in much profit outside of team tournament winnings.

Personally think shotgun starting Thursday and Friday rounds would be a great idea. It’d allow the casual fan to see more golf in a shorter amount of time. Not many people have 5 hours to watch golf on Thursday and Friday. You could watch 30 minutes to an hour and see a lot more golfers play if they did a shotgun start.

Yeah not a fan. Enough of the sports I love are casting aside the current fans for more “casual fans” and it always makes the product worse.

I love how people believe Phil that all the Saudis wanted was a sandwich and some tournaments and they would have handed over billions
