Do You Believe? Pentagon Pizza Report - Order Spike Right Before Israel’s Missile Strike

A curious pattern has once again proven eerily accurate: a surge in pizza deliveries to the Pentagon moments before a major military escalation. This time, the so-called “Pizza Index” lit up just before reports confirmed Israel’s large-scale strike on Iran.
Online observers were quick to notice a sharp rise in pizza orders around the U.S. Department of Defense headquarters, hinting that top brass might be settling in for a long night of closely monitored global events.
Leading the pack was the viral account ‘Pentagon Pizza Report,’ which brands itself as a source of “hot intel,” often highlighting changes in local pizza shop activity as a signal of impending military action.
quote:
The page followed up with screenshots showing data from four nearby pizza spots—We, The Pizza, District Pizza Palace, Domino’s, and Extreme Pizza—all showing significant spikes in traffic.
“With about an hour left before close, the second closest Dominos to the Pentagon (about an eight min drive) is experiencing EXTREMELY high levels of traffic compared to a normal Thursday at about 11:00pm ET,” one post noted.

The tradition is not new. It actually dates back to the Cold War, when Soviet intelligence coined the term “Pizzint”—short for “pizza intelligence”—as they monitored American delivery patterns for signs of strategic activity. Similar surges were reportedly observed before the 1989 U.S. invasion of Panama, when local pizza orders suddenly doubled.
A Domino’s franchise owner in Washington once noted a significant rise in CIA orders the night before Iraq invaded Kuwait in 1990. And even during domestic political drama, such as the 1998 impeachment hearings of President Bill Clinton, pizza delivery spikes were observed. Former CNN Pentagon correspondent Wolf Blitzer once joked in 1990, “The bottom line for journalists: always keep an eye on the pizzas.”

Data is awesome
My brain wasn’t built to be able to extrapolate and correlate advanced data but I sure love reading about it.

I know they are pulling it from Google or some other app but how does the app get near real time data?
I always assumed the busy meter was just an approximation based on other factors (getting a receipt in your gmail or something or cookies following you to the website order).

Sure. If you're ordering in bulk, you're probably going with something like pizza vs. other takeout cuisine.
Similar to the Waffle House index for weather folks.

a surge of pizza orders at dinner time?

Does the Pentagon not have a cafeteria?

Curious to know how they got the data without it being shared with them

They have a whole food court. I’m not buying this. 7pm on a weekday is a popular time for anyone to order a pizza. 11pm on a Thursday isn’t crazy either for people who are starting their weekend early.

Credit card processing company is probably tracking usage.

I figured it would be a spike in booze considering.

It has a full food court. But
1) it’s probably not open 24 hours
2) the portion that is open 24 hours probably is a limited menu that if you have been an employee for a while you are probably burnt out of.
Keep in mind that while there are duty stations there staffed 24/7, unless something is happening the bulk of the Pentagon staffing are 9-5 bureaucratic paper pushers

The USSR used to evaluate the effectiveness of our various agencies in part based on how full the parking lot would be on Friday afternoons.
It was assumed if people were leaving at 2pm on Friday they didn’t have real functions or projects to worry about and were basically useless bureaucrats.

a surge of pizza orders at dinner time? Seems a little crazy.
Look again at the photo. Dark pink is daily average. Light pink is "busier than usual"
This was the report from last night.
3x their normal at midnight on a Monday. Someone is putting in some OT

This is the kind of critical thinking you get from the world these days. You can even be explained it and you still get rationalizing and “I’m not buying it, because it doesn’t make sense to me.”
The trigger of interest isn’t the volume of orders. It’s a SPIKE of them. General public orders would be normally distributed over time. It’s not like all off a sudden everyone would have decided to put their orders in now.
In statistics, any thing outside of a normal distribution typically means there is an instigator impacting outcomes. The page uses the mixture of proximity to the Pentagon and evidence of that instigator to posit that something of significance is about to occur.
In any case, the trend isn’t new, or something recently commented upon by a clickbait source. It even says the Soviets bought into it enough to keep an eye on it.

In the 80's there was a legit conflict occuring and the Russians noticed a lot of cars still at the Pentagon after hours and the pizzas places locally got busy.

Well, there IS another indicator in Washington
quote:
The closest gay bar to the Pentagon, Freddie's Beach Bar, is currently reporting below average activity.
Dominos being high and the bar being low is the classic indicator that something is indeed afoot at the Pentagon.
