Done with ADT

Moved into our new house last November. Guy from ADT who came to hook up alarms and smoke detectors said batteries will last 3 years. I have 4 devices on my kitchen counter because they are “chirping”. $100 for someone to come out. They say on the phone I just need to replace the batteries. But it’s only been 7 months!!!
I’d like to move to a local, more professional company. Any ideas?

The tech had no idea how long ago those batteries were manufactured, it's not his fault. If it's a new construction, he didn't do anything to the detectors that the builder installed. They may have come from a box that's been in the subcontractors storage facility since 2019, who knows. And I bet you're too old to know that most relatively new alarms will chirp as a group in an attempt to alert you to the fact that one of the group is low on battery.
Ah yes, the trope that "local" somehow means better. How'd you like that service the last time you walked into an AT&T store? And newsflash, every national alarm company (Amazon, Wyze, etc.) all have to have a "local" licensee registered at least with the state that does monitoring.
But it sounds like you're the kind of guy that will call the home builder when a light bulb goes out and lament about how they just don't build them like they used to! It's a battery. Life is hard, get a helmet.

Not sure where you are located, but I love having Custom Security. I've never had an issue with them and they are very courteous and professional any time I've had to contact them. I've been having them for 10+ years, or so, now. Their product and customer service has been consistently exceptional. My two cents. Hope you find what you're looking for.

ADT only prevents white guys from b & e.

ADT has been, and always will be, overpriced garbage. I put in a whole pile of Ring cameras rather than deal with those knuckleheads.
Too bad your parents didn't love you enough to put a good helmet on yours before dropping you a few times. ADT uses CR-123A batteries and they will never last as long as they claim. Better to toss them and get the Kidde combo units, put lithium batteries in them, and be done with messing with them for years. I put the newer Kidde 20SDR's in, use lithium AA batteries and don't nuisance trip from cooking in the kitchen which is something ADT detectors love to do.

You sound like an emotional woman. Just change the fricking batteries

This. I’ve got a Great Pyrenees mix and a couple other dogs. Nobody is coming into my home. If they are dumb enough to get past them, there are other defense available. But they make enough noise behind the door that fed ex drops and runs.

Used custom when in Baton Rouge, switched to adt when we moved and it does suck

PSA ... disconnect your system from internet/phone line before you cancel. They will lock up your system where the door chimes/etc... will no longer work or arm.

So, you have a service that changes your smoke detector batteries? I have never heard of anything like that…

Ironic how a security company protecting you from robbery will directly rob the homeowner with their absurdly high costs.
Posted on 6/18/25 at 5:31 pm to Gerry Laval
Did you sign a long arse contract with them? My ex did that and I got to keep paying ADT for 2 years after we sold the house.

Why do you need to pay a tech to come out to change the batteries? Just buy the batteries on Amazon and change them, problem solved.
I hate ADT and switched to Ring last year. Wasn’t because of batteries though.

So we shouldn't home companies accountable for things they say and do.. gotcha.
Yeah, anyone can replace a battery in smoke detector. That wasn't his point.
Sounds like you're the kind of guy that bends over and takes it.

Bending over and taking it is relying on a service visit to do cheap, dumb shite that would be far less of a hassle to deal with yourself.

My MIL has had ADT for years. Everytime I go see her she says she's going to eliminate them. Then the next time I go its still active. 100/mo. She doesn't even have shite to steal anyway,
Oh and the batts are always going bad and are expensive to replace.

I know, you're right of course.. but companies should be called out on their BS.
We all know how crazy annoying those chirps are!
