The upcoming horse racing season in New Orleans is in peril after the owner of the Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots said it plans to give up its racing and gaming licenses following a failed effort to get state legislators to agree to a subsidy to replace lost revenue from slots.
William Carstanjen, the chief executive of Churchill Downs Inc., which has owned the historic track for the last two decades, told the Louisiana State Racing Commission and state legislators in a letter dated June 9 that the company plans to relinquish its license to operate the track and its other 13 off-track betting operations at the oversight board's next meeting.
The racing commission's executive director, Stephen Landry, said Tuesday that he's seen the letter but the commissioners haven't yet set a date for the meeting. He said they expect it will be held sometime within the next 30 days. He declined to comment further.

There is a deal to be made , but I fear Jeff Landry is about to FAFO. We may have some form of racing post CD, but kiss meaningful 3 year old stakes races goodbye. Without CD’s money and participation , you the talent and attention will drop tremendously.

$22 million per year for the 4 tracks as a set aside to help offset the loss of HHR, but Churchill says the state won’t work with them
I think the real issue is they want to get out of the improvements they promised to make

The explosion of gambling in Louisiana is out of control and is nothing more than a money grab for tax revenue and corporate profits from those who cannot control themselves.
Let them pull out…F them
Let them pull out…F them

Old news.
Churchill trying to strong arm people bc they can’t get their way. No racing dates accepted? Slots shut down and they pay a daily fine. Those assholes won’t do it.
Thank god it is listed as historic so they can’t sell it for development like they usually do.

Gotta use that money to further overdevelop Churchill for things only used 3 days a year

The state stood up to them before and refused to grant their 10 year slot extension unless the slumlords made necessary safety upgrades. The turf course was almost unusable. They gave Churchill a list of demands.
And it’s not slot revenue, they are allowed that. It’s “historic racing” which apparently makes more $.
Roussel slapped them around publicly a bit for this latest stunt.

Nobody GAS about horse racing outside of the Kentucky Derby- which is overrated AF, but fun to attend once.

Some of us do.
But frick churchill.
If they don’t run this year they should have to give up jazz fest. No revenue for you, slumlords!

I wish they had closed it in the 70s and maybe my dad wouldn't have been such a broke arse degenerate....I take it back, it was his destiny.

Imagine subsidizing gambling. Insane.

The old Fairgrounds was great, the new one not so much. The old Fairgrounds was laid out for socializing, you could get a table for 20 or more in the Jockey Club, you and your date drinking all day, racing was secondary to the eating and drinking.
I think the Jockey Club was $2 and jacket required. That kept all the riff raff out.

Hopefully the dachshund races in March won't be pulling out.

This is old news
Either Gayle Benson or Jim Bernhardt will buy it.
Those are the 2 front runners
It all comes down the slots. Not horse racing.

Yea, they're pretty much backed themselves into a corner. They need to make improvements and try to grow it themselves, or sell it to another firm, probably at less than market value because the options of what can actually be done with it are extremely limited.

What I don’t fully understand is why “historic racing” is so much more profitable than slots. Less fees to run? Isn’t it very similar to slots? I’ve never been anywhere with the machines. That’s what this boils down to. Slots are no longer “profitable” to them. They wanted to install historic racing machines without going through the proper channels.
