Why is it almost always an "artist" that these stories pertain to?
Oh, and a teachable moment... one that he can use to his advantage and help sell his paintings that just so happens to be of him carrying his baby around dressed like a homeless bum ??

I have a friend that was a dumpster diver and he got mistaken for homeless a lot. Digging in trash was like an addiction to him.
One day I saw him looking in the trash at a car wash and a little old lady gave him some money. I gave him such a hard time about it he hasn't dug in the trash for a few years now.

When I was living in Austin, one of the guys I worked with was getting teased that it was almost time for him to go dumpster diving for Christmas presents. I asked him what that was all about.
He said that UT Austin graduates three times a year and every time after graduation he goes dumpster diving in the area around the campus because most of the kids there are spending daddy's money and don't give a damn about the microwaves and TVs and sometimes computers that they got while in school so they just throw it away.
He said he makes about $500 each time selling the stuff he's found, and he uses that to buy Christmas presents.
