Ok ot, i need some advice. Im 40 and have recently been told I am "borderline" legally blind and not legal to drive. I have noticed my vision take a significant dive in the last year or so but honestly was hoping it was just age related vision loss. I have now seen 4 specialist and now have found out that my optic nerve is severely affected. Currently going through testing to find out the cause but now i have no clue what to do as far as work since my job requires heavy equipment use. My wife(no pics) luckily has a stable job but honestly i now feel like a worthless pos knowing i wont be able to continue working/driving. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

There used to be a guy who worked the grill in the Orleans parish criminal courthouse. Dude was blind but still somehow cooked. So you could do that.

Get checked for diabetes if you haven't already.

You aren't a POS because a medical situation has knocked you down.

Okay, driving is out (I'm truly sorry), but you can still work.

Now is the time- before you CAN'T do your current job- to find out what job you WILL be able to do with limited vision.

Your wife will love you anyway.

I'm sorry this is happening to you and I hope you can find your way through it without much damage.

I am a diabetic and honestly figured diabetes was the cause but 3 specialist have confirmed that my retinas show no sign of diabetic retinopathy. The current dr is genetic testing me for LHON. Unfortunately there is little to do as far as treatment

That's what I'd be doing. Start researching alternate careers like court stenographer, massage therapy, or something.

What line of work are you in right now? What are your hobbies/interests?

About a month ago that guy got a new job there as a warden.

Didn’t work out so well, as I seem to recall.

Sorry to hear that man, my grandfather went legally blind from Glaucoma and my great uncle as well so I'm paranoid as hell about it and get my eyes checked every year.

Elon is working on it but no telling how far out it will be for mass consumption:

Why do you feel lucky that you don’t have any pics of your wife? She can’t be that bad.

My current position is athletic grounds maintenance at a university. I started working grounds/landscape as a summer job while in school and it turned into a 20yr career. "I will go back next semester" was one of my biggest mistakes

You're just the average Asian driver in Houston, keep on with that backhoe sir!

You could probably switch into an office job doing scheduling, so you can use a computer with accessibility features. You probably won't like it coming from an outdoor job, but ya gotta do what you gotta do. Maybe equipment maintenance if you know how?

Those are two very good ideas for an alternate career!

A quick googling also informed me that there are assistive technologies out there specifically for limited vision in the workplace.

If you could access some AT in your current role, it may buy you more time to transition to another job more suited to your condition... or, if the AT is good enough maybe you could stay in your current role.
