President Donald Trump’s law and order agenda is to thank for the murder rate dropping by 20% this year so far, the White House said Tuesday.
Crime data analyst Jeff Asher reviewed the most homicide-prone cities nationwide and found a more than 20% decrease from 2024.
“Since President Trump took office, murder rates have plummeted across the entire United States,” press secretary Karoline Leavitt told The Daily Signal in a statement. “American families were promised their communities would be safer and President Trump swiftly delivered by vocally being tough on crime, unequivocally backing law enforcement, and standing firm on violent criminals being held to the fullest extent of the law.”

As of early May, murders were down 31.6% in Baltimore, 34.5% in St. Louis, 36.8% in Cleveland, 63% in Denver, 30.6% in New Orleans, 26.8% in New York, and 23.7% in Chicago, according to Asher.
Philadelphia had 88 recorded homicides as of May 22, 2025. Four years ago, by May 22, 2021, 201 murders had been recorded, according to the Philadelphia Police Department crime dashboard.

Eighty-eight is the lowest year-to-date homicide number that the Philadelphia Police Department has listed on its dashboard for this same period, tying with 2014 and 2015.
The lowest national murder rate recorded was in 2014.
“If this decline continues through the Fall then we should seriously start having a discussion about the probability of a record-breaking year,” Asher wrote on his Substack. “Until then, it’s sufficient to be aware of and measuring the possibility of a new record low.”
The murder rate in 2024 also fell from the 2020 spike and returned to pre-COVID-19 levels.
Trump has signed a number of executive orders aimed at reducing crime rates in America.
On his first day back in office, Trump issued his executive order “Restoring the Death Penalty and Protecting Public Safety.”

They did last year. Quite a bit. The data was claimed to be faked.
I'm curious to see if those committed to the data being faked celebrate these numbers
I'm awaiting our pro-Russian, Grok-addicted friend

I would be curious to see the racial breakdown on the murder rate reduction.

Philly saw its lowest homicide rate in a decade in 2024

But, this year, Philadelphia has seen its lowest murder rate -- 266 according to the Philadelphia Police Department as of about 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2024 -- since 247 people were killed in 2014.
In 2019, Philadelphia saw 353 murders, and that figure climbed to 559 in 2021.
This year the rate dropped about 40% from last year.

When the numbers were questioned last year, I thought the primary issue was that the national numbers were being presented without all the major metro areas having reported. That was the criticism.
"Philadelphia had 88 recorded homicides as of May 22, 2025. Four years ago, by May 22, 2021, 201 murders had been recorded, according to the Philadelphia Police Department crime dashboard."
These numbers are comparing metro area year over year numbers.
Above is comparing 2025 to 2021. Below is vague, but it sounds like it is comparing 2025 to 2024.

And people like SFP explained how you can just go to the individual cities, who were mostly reporting in-kind decreases, which made that talking point irrelevant.
I literally went to most major cities and posted the individual city data in multiple threads on this issue last year.

People fought this data for years pre-Covid when it was clear violent crime was decreasing. They're just doubling down now because the data still doesn't conform to their preferred fear porn/emotional response.
quote:
We know violent crime was terrible form the mid-70s to the mid-90s, and then crashed over the next 25 years (even though people still try to argue this).
We know violent crime spiked with Covid and the riots in 2020 and kept going up through at least 2021 and some of 2022.
It appears that we're going back to a pre-2020 level of violent crime, which makes all the sense in the world when you look at it logically (and the effects of the Covid era keep decreasing).

quote:
Crime has been falling since the early-mid 90s and continued to do so until Covid caused negative externalities.
Now that the "Covid bump" is over, it's going back down to where it was pre-Covid.
This has crossed multiple Democrat and Republican admins. It is in no way related to any partisan status or policy.
quote:
Unless some major event occurs, crime is going to continue to go down under Trump
I'm going to be sure to bookmark this particular thread
Lots of crow to be eaten by posters in that thread.
quote:
That statement requires a level of intellectual inconsistency.
Arguing "the data is fake" when it's bad for your argument and "the data is valid" when it's good for your argument is not a consistent position.
IF the data is fake, then we can't discuss the issue at all b/c there is nothing with veracity from which to take a side.

While I don't doubt COVID played a huge role in the spike, it annoys me that "what else happened that Summer" is always ignored in these discussions (by media, not necessarily you).
Setting aside the riots and murders and anti-police sentiment - I think few question that there were ramifications in policing in major cities in light of Floyd and Brooks et al. that persisted for a while afterwards and I think meaningfully contributed to the spike. Officer shortages, dialed back police presence, police backlash, etc.

It's also plummeted in New Orleans under Latoya Cantrell. I guess we should give her credit, too?

Are you implying that the murder rates were high due to covid, and it takes 4 years for the plandemic "spike" to subside, therefore the lower crime can not be attributed to this administration?

Trump stopping the flow of illegals has a lot to do with it.
Here's a more detailed look at the trends:
Violent Crime:
The violent crime rate has been decreasing, with some reports indicating declines of 14% to 16% between January 2024 and January 2025, according to GrowSF.org.
Property Crime:
Property crime has also seen a substantial decrease, with some reports showing declines of nearly 29%, according to GrowSF.org.
Specific Crimes:
Homicides have shown particularly significant drops, with some reports indicating declines of 16% to 23%, according to Jeff Asher | Substack. Motor vehicle theft, which had been increasing, has also seen a reversal, with some reports showing declines of 24%, according to the Council on Criminal Justice.
Long-Term Trends:
Many violent crimes are now at or below levels seen in 2019, the year prior to the pandemic and racial justice protests, according to the Council on Criminal Justice.

Just like San Francisco crime rates dropped when Soros prosecutors stopped prosecuting theft crime for anything under $900.
See! No more theft! Voila!
