Best 30" gas powered riding mower

Am entertaining buying one. My yard is not that big so don't need a 42" lawn tractor. Makers of 30" are Cub Cadet, Troy-Built, Toro and Craftsman. 2 are made by MTD.
Reading the reviews, one has 'steering plate' issues. Most of the poor reviews were a reflection on poor assembly by the Big Box stores...Lowe's, Home Depot, Tractor Supply and their 'not my problem' attitude, not the mower itself.
Would appreciate input/thoughts/experince on cutting ability, ease of maintenance, durability, etc. Also would like one that cuts in reverse, but not a deal killer.

I have a Toro Timecutter 32" zero turn I have had for about 8 years that I have had no issues with.

Upvote for old school riding Snapper. Cheap, readily available and nearly indestructible. Don’t expect a cup holder or any other options. They are just grass cutting machines.

I shopped for a small rider last year. Seemed like all the new ones under $3k were poor quality MTD products. Got on facebook market place and searched for a used Snapper. Got a great deal on a 2003 Snapper 28" with 2 rear bagging set ups, a de-thatcher attachment and a mulching cover for the deck for $650. Looks almost new.
The newer Snappers like this are junk. Do no buy

I’ll second the old school Snappers for a smaller yard. It can be a little aggravating to have to bend over and engage the blade so often. I think there are ways to bypass that but I’ve never done it. Runs well and is pretty simple to work on, sharpen blades and change the oil.
