Bringing home an 8 week old Shih Tzu puppy on Saturday. What is a good brand for his diet?
Looking for recommendations.
Thanks

do you have a vet picked out for future care and routine checkups ? If so, call the vet, or call several to see what they recommend. Diet is important for puppies otherwise your new friend will be shittting all over the carpet

We use Fresh Pet from the refrigerated section of Publix mixed with a little wet Blue Buffalo for our Shih Tzu. As a pup we just gave him kibble and some wet food. Although it was quality kibble (if there is such a thing), ever since we switched him and his mutt sister over to Fresh Pet they've leaned up and their allergies are almost non-existent.

Used purina pro puppy chicken and rice for our lab when we brought him home. Needed to wet if for the first few weeks.
Also worth asking who you get them from what they were were using to ween it off.

I feed my Charlie Dawg Science Diet, but I’m sure she’d prefer pork chops, rice, & gravy…

I always fed Purina Puppy Chow.I raised Beagles, for some years and had other various puppies over the years.
I quit wetting it after they were weaned. They eat it fine dry and seemed like it helped keep them from chewing everything up.

Left over rice and heavy. Little gravy, meat and rice!

I am a big fan of Canidae Pure with Wholesome Grains Limited Ingredient Real Salmon & Oatmeal Recipe Puppy Dry Dog Food. It's rated very high by Dog Food Advisor and Candidae is a great brand. I switched from Purina Pro Plan puppy formula.
I feed my adult dogs the adult version as well.
Whatever brand you decide on, transition your dog slowly. And keep plenty of cans of pumpkin on hand! Don't be afraid to add a tablespoon or two to help with the transition. And after the transition is over (gradually over a 2 week period), don't discard your unused pumpkin cans. It's great to settle an upset stomach. Lastly, order FloraCare GI from Amazon. No Rx required. These two things alone will keep you out of the Vet's office (unless an absolute emergency) for stomach or GI issues.

Many years ago I had a dog that dropped 16 pups in a litter and I used Similac to nurse some of the pups on a rotating basis until she had enough and called it a day and weaned them off.
Once they were on their own I would take puppy chow and run it through a blender, add a bit of Similac and beaten raw eggs to wet it and they feasted on that like it was their last meal.
All pups survived and went to new owners over time.

My husband has always raised hunting dogs and he's always sworn by Purina Puppy Chow. Switches to the high protein stuff as they get older.

You're an incredibly shitty human being if you don't buy the most expensive fresh food that has to be refrigerated.

We just did the blue buffalo kibble with the life bits. It's a good middle ground between the cheap and expensive kibbles.
My parents gave their dog nothing but Ol' Roy from 6 weeks old till it died and that dog was like 20 years old or something when he finally went.
