Doing a breaking bad rewatch, still incredible

This show delivers on every rewatch. AMC really captured lightning in a bottle with this show.
However I want to break down something that has always bugged me. Even though Walter gave up his share in grey matter and missed out on Billions, the idea that he’s a struggling teacher who can barely keep the lights on makes no sense.
He contributed significant to research that won a Nobel prize and helped found a billion dollar company. I can understand not reaching a similar level of success but his only option is teaching High school chemist? And does Skylar even work? I know she eventually goes back to book keeping for Ted Bennecke but is she really just a stay at home mom before then? Family is struggling to pay the bills and she’s just a dead beat? Especially considering at the opening she’s barely pregnant and their oldest is in high school. Plenty old enough where mom doesn’t have to be home all day.
Unless Walter is so depressed that he basically undermines himself and his potential, how does some pharmaceutical company at minimum not scoop this guy up? Or any company needing an elite chemist. It’s not like it’s a secret he’s a brilliant chemist and only discovers this by making meth.
Again, awesome show. And I get that having him be in the position he’s in at the start is what driving so much of the show. But it sort of doesn’t make sense how he got there unless I’m missing something.
And they even mention poor health insurance. Don’t teachers as government employees generally have good health insurance relative to most private employees?

Skylar is one of the worst characters in the history of shows

provide your reasons. And they have to be other than "she got in the way of the main character that I like".

That is a good point. Vince should have toned down their accomplishments a bit. Also, Walt leaving cold because he was intimidated by Gretchen's wealthy family is a bit of a stretch.

Well, he does have a retarded kid. Skylar probably needed to be a stay at home mom.
And Walt did not give up his share, he agreed to a buyout. Over the series, we see they don't make good financial decisions.
And White's research work that led to a Nobel prize was a result of being part of a team. That team assessed his role and decided they are better off without him than they ever were with him. That's probably not very attractive to a pharmaceutical company.
But I do agree that Vince should have showed scenes of Walt trying to apply for better jobs and screwing up those opportunities by demonstrating that he's a selfish and shitty team player.

You've clearly ignored the topic discussion which was:
quote:
Skylar is one of the worst characters in the history of shows
because nothing you've said really illustrates that, but let's just dive in.
quote:
She is insensitive
this is a pretty subjective thing, but ok. In the early parts of BB skylar acts EXACTLY in line with how any normal regular human being would in that situaiton. Her husband has a second phoen, he's acting weird, he's faking blakouts, he's hanging out with drug dealers he used to teach. But ok sure, she's insensitive.
quote:
selfish
couldn't possibly be farther from the truth. The mob didn't bring down capone, the IRS did. Skylar knew that the feds were breathing down their necks because of shite involving beneke's business so she took Walt's $600K and got the two goons to physically force him to pay so that the federal heat would stay off them. People often, OFTEN, overlook this part of the story but if it wasn't for that this story has an entirely differnet outcome.
quote:
self-absorbed.
ok, whatever I guess
quote:
She is a terrible mother
dealing with a handicapped semi tarded son and an unplanned daugher pretty much entiurely on her own. what great parental qualities was walt espousing?
quote:
wife,
walt gives up millions to be a HS teacher. He's a loser professionally. she lets him do anal. she sticks by him when she finds out he's a gotdamn meth dealer on the run from her brother.
quote:
sibling
she's one of the very few people in marie's life telling her she's motherfricking idiot kleptomaniac and needs to stop
quote:
friend
idk who her friends even are so can't answer this one
quote:
Other than that she is a great.
she's a real person. An actual, true representation of how a normal regular adult human would act in this situation. Except she actually goes much, much furhter by accepting shite you adn me would not and actaully gets deep into the coverup to help save and protect their family.
But yeeeahhhhhhhhhhhh you're right, she's "LITERALLY THE WORST PERSON ON TELEVISION IN HISTORY".
ETA: She cheated, which I think is one of the lowest things a person can do to another. So I'm not saying she's a saint. The cheating was despicable. I'm just saying the memes of "OmG skyler is like so LiTeRaLlY the wooorst person Evarrr" are dumber than shite.

I was rolling along with this series until the episode where they were in the lab and the entire episode was about him trying to catch a fly or some dumb shite like that. After that annoying arse episode, I turned it off

Oh I am serious.. I turned it off and started a new show and forgot to go back to Breaking Bad. I am going to continue where I left off - It's an awesome show but that episode annoyed the frick out of me while I was binging it one shitty weather weekend

I felt like the show leaned pretty heavily into Walt being depressed, cucked by his overbearing wife, not to mention also suffering physically from the cancer. Not to hard to see a guy massively underachieving with all that going on.

One would say with all he had accomplished and nothing to show for it would lead someone to cook meth and you know….break bad
