Boston to Acadia (and back) 2 Extra Days - Ideas?

Taking my first trip up to this part of the country. We'll be in Boston for July 4th, then up to Mt. Desert Island for 3 to explore Acadia NP mostly. That leaves me the the better part of 3 days to make my way back down to Boston for our flight out in the evening.
We have some stuff we'd like to do/see/eat in Portland either going up or down.
We tend to spend our vacations hiking. The coast seems like it is full of stuff to see, and I'm sure we'd find stuff to do anywhere on the coast between those points. I fear booking my extra nights in somewhere that is too similar to our time in Acadia.
Is there anything great in that area I'm overlooking?
I have a few things I found that I'd consider:
- one a bit out of the way in Rhode Island (Newport Car Museum).
- I'm also considering going out towards the mountains in central New Hampshire for a change of topography for more outdoor hiking.
- Plymouth might be interesting for history, but could be incredibly boring (Plymouth rock looks like a rock in a cage)

I wouldn't spend two days in Plymouth, it's just a rock
Newport and Cape Cod areas are nice but will be very crowded that time of year and might already be booked up
Vermont area would be nice for that amount of time

I’m doing that same combo in early June. Have been to Boston several times and Maine once.
Lighthouses are cool, and Maine has a shite ton of them. I love that coastline more than any other. Bring some trunks and take a dip. We swam at a public beach near Portland (Crescent Beach?). You’ll be shocked at how cold the water is in July. Major shrinkage.
The LL Bean store in Freeport is obligatory. Right off the interstate. Just to say you’ve been. It’s amazing.
The best thing about Maine is the variety of towns along the coast. Great little restaurants in every one. Kennebunkport is overrated.
Where on Mt. Desert are you staying? We’ll be in Southwest Harbor.

St John, NB is close to Mt Desert Island. You could go check out the Bay of Fundy.
If you want more hiking, go spend a couple of days in the White Mountains. You can stay in North Conway, Lincoln, or the Littleton/Franconia area.
The Lake Winnipesauke region in NH has some fun hikes that aren't as strenuous as the Whites while still offering nice views of the region.

White Mountains. We stayed in a B&B. Take Kancamungus highway. Really pretty drive back through NH into Vermont.

We're just a bit south of there in "Seawall" but I think it is still classifed as Southwest Harbor.

Here's a thread about what we did a couple years ago

Camden, ME is a very nice town.
Moodys Diner on Hwy 1 is legendary also.
There’s some random bridge up there with a 450 ft observation deck in one of the towers. This is also on Hwy 1. Worth it for a quick stop.
Portland has a great reputation for its restaurants and I found it to be justified. Never had a bad meal there. Check out Duckfat and Leeward.
Traffic is going to be awful on Mt Desert Island that time of year.

Thanks! Very helpful for sure.
I ended up booking the last few nights in North Conway, NH to do some hiking and exploring in the White Mountains.
We do plan on doing the beehive. I know me and the boys will handle it fine... my wife... we shall see
