Nebraska has received the first federal waiver to ban soda and energy drinks from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), commonly known as food stamps.

The move is set to take effect on Jan. 1, 2026 as a part of a broader effort to restrict taxpayer dollars from contributing to the purchase of sugary drinks and junk food under the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Governors in Iowa, Arkansas, Indiana, Kansas, West Virginia and Colorado are also considering similar changes to SNAP benefits.

Program funds are supplied by the USDA and administered individually by states. Recipients right now are able to buy anything except alcohol, tobacco and hot foods. LINK

Louisiana shouldn't be far behind since Landry said earlier this month that LA is seeking a waiver to exclude candy and soda.

Right. All the fat asses will be up in arms. Give me my free money and I'll do whatever I please with taxpayer dollars. You can buy junk food, just on your dime, not ours.

Why does it start next year? Why can't it start June 1, 2025. Just take it off the list. Doesn't seem hard to do. Government makes the easy stuff so hard.

I don’t want to get accused of hyperbole but I honestly saw a guy about a month ago with an entire grocery cart filled with sodas whip out a Louisiana purchase card to pay. Really pissed me off.

It is a start but the entire program needs to be revamped... Junk food should not be allowed either...

Do you expect to get a refund check mailed to you if someone doesn't buy candy? Or is this something that just feels good for you?

This is how it used to be done when there were literal food stamps.

You would think beggers would be less whiny and bitchy

Please tell us why allowing welfare mooches to use taxpayer money on soft drinks and junk food is a good thing.

No, I expect them to use the tax monies I am forced to pay to buy something more responsible than Ding Dongs and Diet Cokes. They don't like it? They can go get an education and then a job that pays them enough to not need public assistance in the first place, thus allowing them to buy whatever shitty junk food they want.

Part of the trap of social welfare programs is the allowance (and often times the quiet promotion) of continuing to make poor life choices.
