Real diseases, or just excuses to stay home all day and bum around. What does the O-T say of it?

For some people, probably real. Probably the effects of mold toxicity or endometriosis or some other malady that is under tested.

All of my kids have fibromyalgia, sadly, the only cure is video games.

POTS

Isn't this the one where your heart rate spikes and causes you to faint if you get up too fast? Seems like that'd be hard to fake

Someone needs to invent a Painometer where you can stick a finger in it and it spits out whether that is enough pain to miss work.

Ehlers Danlos is absolutely a real thing. It has to do with connective tissue deterioration.

I'm pretty sure I've got POTS or something similar to it. It sucks and very noticeable in my day to day life. However I don't get any benefit from it. I still work a full time job and have all the same responsibilities as I did before I got it. But the high heart rate, random dizziness/lightheadedness, heat sensitivity can be brutal at times. I never dealt with any of that prior to about 2 years ago. I'm not sure how you can say it's fake when it can legitimately make people go unconscious randomly during the day.

I had similar, but it turned out my BP was way too high. After I got that under control, no more light headiness from standing too fast.

Interesting. Did you have high heart rate as well?

Yes. I think it was mostly tied to drinking, though. I exercise now and don't drink anymore, and lots of problems I had before have seem to regulate.

You’re most likely a hypocritical, lazy bum who’s pointing at the splinters in other people’s eyes while you have a beam in your own eye.

The heart rate portion is verifiable with a monitor

Huge psych component associated with fibromyalgia. It’s basically a rule everything else out and we have nothing else to offer but this diagnosis. I’ve worked with those patients many years and it’s mentally exhausting. If you really want to understand this mentality, join a fibromyalgia facebook support group. It’s basically a constant gripe/complain/I have more ailments than you forum

There's been some good research in recent years that suggests it could be auto-immune/inflammation related or potentially tied to trauma (something like 80%+ people diagnosed with fibro have a background of trauma). Some of it is tied to why something like low dose Naltrexone (addresses inflammation) or anti-depressants can help with the pain associated with it.

But yes, a lot of the Facebook groups enable and are full of batshit crazies that have no desire to address the issue because it's easier to stay "stuck" in being sick. And they will give you shite if you're not "as sick" as others. I was diagnosed back in 2021, but jumped out of those pretty quick because I was able to manage mine with Magnesium Glycinate, anti-inflammatory foods, and exercise. A big key is knowing you're not going to injure yourself further by pushing through it.
