The Semovente L40 da 47/32 was an Italian self-propelled gun built during World War II.
The Semovente da 47/32 was created by mounting a Cannone da 47/32 anti-tank gun in an open-topped, box-like superstructure on a L6/40 light tank chassis. Some were built as command tanks with a radio installed instead of the main gun. An 8 mm machine gun disguised as the 47 mm main gun was used on these versions to make them look like a regular Semovente 47/32s. About 400 Semoventi da 47/32 were built from 1941 onward. The Semovente da 47/32 was the most heavily armed Italian armoured fighting vehicle used on the Eastern Front.

I take it you play World of Tanks?

I used to. I stopped after it became pure pay to win. 3-arty party when you’re playing a heavy tank is brutal.

I played it for a while myself. My problem though was I tried to fight the tank the way tanks fight in the real world. That’s not how the game works though.

That particular AFV was horribly obsolete in every way, past the year of 1941. It's a shame that anybody had to actually be a crew member of that vehicle on the Eastern Front in WW2.

Yeah it’s definitely not a sim based game.

It’s definitely one of the more obscure vehicles of the war. As for the crew, I was surprised to find it had a crew of three. But if you look at my first group of pics, you’ll see there were only two seats, one for the gunner on the left, one for the driver on the right. The third crew member, the loader, didn’t even have a seat. Instead, he had to make do sitting on top of an ammo storage box directly behind the driver…

And, to make matters worse for the poor loader, as you can see in the pic he was totally exposed to enemy fire.

Probably why the Italians decided to stick to clothing after the war.

I’m surprised you were able to find a kit for that one.

I remember a “Tobruk” strategy game from a long time ago, based on tank battles in North Africa in WWII.
Nobody wanted the Italian armor in that game. At best they were like pawns in chess. One of the Italian tanks was nicknamed “the flaming coffin”.

Frankly, so am I. I found it at a huge hobby store in Kennesaw, GA a couple weeks ago. Before then, I’d never even heard this kit existed.

Dude that's legit! Great work as usual!
What paints and method of painting did you use? Love the weathering man - what did you use for the wash?

War Thunder's Realistic Battle mode is much more representative of actual tank battles.

True, but the Soviets were throwing thousands of obsolete tanks and even horse cavalry divisions at them during that time too. T-34's and KV-1s were fairly rare, and usually made up 1/10th to 1/3rd of Russian attacks. The crappy Italian armor and AT guns could put up a decent fight against T-28/T-40/T-50/T-60 and all of the BT series and armored cars that the Russians used.
The Soviets were using horse cavalry at least as late as Stalingrad. Not something you will see on their propaganda films, which is pretty much all we have on film from those battles.

I used Tamiya acrylics. The base is Dark Yellow and the camo is Olive Green. I thinned the paints 2:1 using Tamiya acrylic thinner and painted using my airbrush. As for the pattern, I first painted the upper hull olive green, then used putty to mask the camo pattern before painting the dark yellow…

As for weathering, I used a small piece of natural sponge to dab on dark iron to get the chipping effect on the paint. I used Tamiya brown panel accent on the lines, rivets, etc. I used Flory “grime” wash on the vehicle interior an. flory “dark dirt” wash on the exterior. I applied both using a small piece of natural sponge to dab the washes over all surfaces.

Italian fighters and warships weren't tragic compared to their opponents. Their army, artillery and communication gear was pretty much horse poop, though.
Their navy suffered during the interwar period from lack of fuel/oil which prevented their training. Once the shooting started, the lack of radar was pretty telling.

Nice work, Darth!
I just purchased my first airbrush this week for gaming miniature painting. Hopefully I’ll be able to knock out models faster and more consistently, but I go through long lulls in my hobbying.
Haven’t used the airbrush yet.
