Here is our itinerary so far....we will be taking trains to get around. My only real concern is getting from Varenna to Milan on way to Venice, I have tickets booked but worried about crowding, but we leave early in the morning.
Day one - arrive in Milan at 11:20 AM
Day 2-3 - Milan, Have the Duomo rooftop tour at 10 AM, have Last Supper tour at 5PM
Day 3-6 - Arrive in Varenna, stay there for three days, nothing booked. Debating renting a boat one day.
Day 6-8 - Venice, have nothing booked but will most likely do Doge palace etc. Staying near the train station.
Day 8-15 - Florence. Staying near Ponte Vecchio in an Airbnb. Have Uffizi booked day 9 first tour in morning, have David scheduled
day 10 first entry in morning.
Day 15 - Back to Milan for flight out the next day, staying the night at the airport.. Debating stopping in Bologna for the day if we can
find somewhere to store bags.
Day 16 - Flight back
We want to use Florence as our base for day trips etc. We were in Rome last year after a cruise, so won't be going there. Any suggestions on anything else to make sure I book? Anything you suggest we see that I haven't covered. We really want to explore while we are there this time. Wife, me and 12 yr old daughter.
Thanks

I book business or first on the trains so I have an assigned seat.

This, plus it's usually not much of a premium.

We have those on all of the routes except for Milan to Varenna and vice versa, we are booked 1st class, but it doesn't give you an option to pick a seat since its a regional train.

You definitely don’t need a car in Florence but if you have that many days in Florence I would rent a car for a few days and explore the Tuscan hill towns.

This- I would spend 3 nights in Florence then rent a car and spend 4-5 nights in a Tuscan hill town. We stayed in Monticchiello and it was amazing.

We did three days in Varrena in ‘22. Lots of fun. Take the ferry over to Bellagio one day.

You should see a performance at La Scala. I attended the recent premier of Name of the Rose. Incredible show. Buy the standing table for intermission. I also saw an 11:00 orchestral quintet. It was great but will not get you into the main performance hall.
There are also musical performances at the Duomo and I think at the Park of the Two Basilicas.
We had a nice Milanese meal at El Brellin in the Navigili neighborhood. Osso bucco with risotto. Cool area.

For the Varenna to Milan train, leaving early should help with crowds, but it's still good to check for quieter trains. In Florence, don't miss the Boboli Gardens and consider a day trip to Pisa or Cinque Terre if you have time.

Looks solid. Wish I had that many days. I’m only working with ten. Flying into Florence and back out of Rome. Spending the bulk of trip in Positano though. We heading there in late June.
