I'm heading to Kansas City in a couple of weeks for a conference, staying downtown at the Loews...looking for recommendations for things to see in the area. I've already seen some food recommendations, but would also love to catch some live music and hit a dive bar or two. Thanks in advance.

If you're a beer guy Boulevard is worth a visit. There are some smaller breweries downtown.

Unfortunately can't help you on the other items.

I am, and I will be with a lot of other beer people, so that is an awesome suggestion.

Thanks

Dude...that is an awesome list of stuff. I'm going to pare through it and start prioritizing. I'm thinking WWI museum is at the top of the list.

The WW1 Museum and the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art are both fantastic. If you want venture out, there's a cool speakeasy in Lee's Summit called The W. You have to call them and get a time and password for them to let you in.

If you are a college hoops fan, KU is forty minutes away. Naismith is buried on campus, the inventor of the sport. Allen Fieldhouse is way cool.

I went to a conference two weeks ago and stayed at Loew's as well. There isn't much.

I did walk to Jack Stacks for BBQ which is walking distance from the hotel and it was ok. Not the best. Should have tried something else.

Just found out we are having a social event one night at "No Other Pub". It looks pretty promising.

If you want dive bar, The Brick LINK is tough to beat.

The bar at the Lowes is really good. Drum Room isn't far and is good bar at the Hilton. Lula's is actually pretty good southern food. Buffalo Pizza is good. For music, The Truman, Midland theater, Uptown theater, The Crossroads, etc based on bookings.

The crossroads area has some good breweries and there is Mean Mule Distillery that is great as well.

If you have transportation I recommend going out to Rieger Distillery, great bar, even has a speakeasy. It is also next to Knuckleheads which is one of the best musical venues/ dives in the city, always has music going on.

Saw a concert there last year. Great recommendation, they have a solid line up of bands and great acoustics.

Another that gets overlooked is the Arabia Steamboat Museum. My brother has a friend that is in the family that found it. They were looking for a steamboat that had a gold shipment when it wrecked. Instead, they found a steamboat that was full of supplies for the frontier. So they ended up running a museum, much to their surprise. If you have any interest in the history of the country in frontier days (it sank in 1856) it's a great place to visit. The amount of artifacts is almost overwhelming. Where it sank was oxygen free so everything is in excellent condition. It was under a corn field when they found it. Keeping pumps running to get the water out nearly broke them.

WWI museum is great. The Negro League Museum is interesting if you like baseball and doesn't really take a ton of time. Nelson -Atkins is good if you like art. The national museum of toys is interesting and cheap. The TWA museum is pretty cool. They still have old people that worked for TWA that man it and have all kinds of stories.

I was not impressed at all with Joe's KC BBQ and thought the BBQ at Jack Stack's at the Freight House is better. In any case, if you eat a lot of Texas BBQ, then just stick with BBQ pork products in KC as opposed to beef.

The Majestic was OK, but the set up with the jazz downstairs was kind of cool. 801 Chophouse was very good - but it's a small chain. I've eaten at the original in Des Moines and the one in KC and they are both very good.

The Antler Room is very good for some drinks and a meal. I try to hit Clay & Fire every time I'm in town. Its a neat little place and the food is good.
