Which resort in which town? That kinda matters.

Sure. Welcome your lily white arse into Jamrock, mon.

I went there in 2023 in Montego Bay and was told by our driver to not spend time outside of the resort without a local escorting us.

Not really, no but it depends where. We left Round Hill / Montego for a beer run and the native guard at the gates did a double take when we told him where we were going, like we were fricking crazy . “Out there ?!”
His concern was not unfounded. Machetes being dragged along dirt roads, grifters everywhere. People are desperate out there. You are a target.

I stayed on the southside of the island (Treasure Beach area) for over a week outside of any kind of gated resort. Here's my experience:
1) The closer you are to a major tourist hub, but worse the issues will be.
2) The majority of issues are just pushy vendors harassing you.
3) When you get away from the major tourist areas, people are generally minding their own business and really nice. They haven't developed a parasitic relationship with tourists.

Why jamaica?
So many safe places in the Caribbean for similar cost

My wife and I went on a Caribbean cruise with a stop in Jamaica. We went and toured the town the cruise ship visited. We were constantly harassed with walking vendors trying to sell us cheap trinkets and got insulted when we said "no thanks". My wife was harassed with women insisting she let them braid her hair in strands and weave in beads Jamaican style. The food wasn't appealing. There was one eating place with their specialty "stewed goat in green curry sauce". No thanks. We got disgusted and returned to the cruise boat. We'll never visit Jamaica again...or any Caribbean country again. There's plenty to see and do in the good ole USA.

We stayed at Jakes for a few nights and Ital Rest for the remainder but walked all over the area.

I wouldn't paint all Caribbean countries with the same brush as Jamaica. There are some awesome ones.

Did you happen to notice the Doranja House across from Ital?
Were you there before or after the hurricane (Aug 2024)?

I don't specifically recall it. It was way back in 2000 when we visited. It was our honeymoon.

TB got lit up by the hurricane. 75% of all rooves destroyed.
It's 3rd world now, it must have really been so 25 years ago. Jake's is still plugging along.

No...why would you want to go off resort? Its worse than Scotlandville out there baw. Don't do it.
I'll add that the appeal of Excellence Oyster Bay is that it ihas it's own private beach as they own the entire pennisula, what that means is zero locals on the beach trying to sell you weed or braid your old lady's hair.
There's nothing remotely close to EOB worth-while.

Then you are missing out because there are many great, safe Caribbean destinations.

This. Jamaica and Haiti are two destinations I will never set foot on.

Spice of Life in Birmingham has it on the menu. Pretty damn good.

We are going to Excellence Oyster Bay in June and have no intentions of leaving the resort. My wife has done Jamaica off resort and said it was a shite hole.
