It's May, and that means it's time for Ghibli Fest. I just started watching Miyazaki movies this year, and they're amazing. So far we've watched Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, and Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. Everything about them is fantastic. I'm not sure which one's we'll go see in the theater this year. For my wife, oldest and I, probably Grave of the Fireflies (yeah, I know). As a family w/ the younger kids, leaning towards Kiki's or Totoro.

We only got to see Ponyo during last year's Ghibli Fest.

I told my kid that we'll try to see as many this year as possible, but there is no way in hell I'm sitting through Grave of the Fireflies again. Might be the most depressing movie I've ever seen.

Can't wait. Most of these i've never gotten to see in theaters.

Saw Boy and the Heron when it came out in theaters. It was excellent. I feel like its story was a little more scattered that the others and kind of choppy, but movie was still fantastic. Robert Pattinson did an amazing job with the english dub.

Really excited for Howl and Spirited Away.

Have you seen any of the others in the theater as your second watch after seeing it first at home? Both of these would be contenders for me.

Many of these we found in the Knox County TN library system.

They were sort of like potato chips, we couldn't stop at one.

Fireflies is the most memorable = unforgettable. Not for children IMO.

There are several documentaries out about the studio, and the huge carved Tontora at the entry.

Never seen any of them in theater, besides Boy and the Heron. All the others have all been at home.

Speaking of Nausicaa… I had no idea until after I watched it who the voice actors all were. I picked up on Patrick Stewart, bit the rest were surprises to me.

Patrick Stewart - Lord Yupa
Uma Thurman - Yushana
Shia Lebeouf - Asbel
Edward James Olmos - Mito
Mark Hamill - Mayor of Pejite

I think this is the youngest I’ve bc ever seen Shia

Old video from -2005(? - year when dub was released):

Im shocked at how good of a job they do with english dubs.. kirsten dunst did a great job with kikis delivery service as well

Also the soundtrack to kikis delivery service is amazing.. that 50s inspired japanese song is so bad arse. My kids made me rewind that scene like 50 times. Such a banger

Is the Japanese version of that song in the English dub version of the film?

I'm on the fence to see Kiki's tomorrow in the theater w/ my wife, 16, 13 and 9 year old. Sounds like we need to see it at home in case they want to rewind that scene

Just watched this tonight. My 9 yr old was completely into this movie. I can’t say I wasn’t…. It’s a wonderful story with a ton of laughs, in addition to the serious lessons presented. The blu-ray had done great features, including Miyazaki’s inspiration for Kiki. Phil Hartman is in the voice acting bonus feature. The film was actually dedicated to him at the end.

Just realized that the sign for her delivery service (the iron one they hang at the end not the one in the window) is the same as the design on the cake from the madame.

So many nuggets in these movies. I’m currently thinking about the significance of the painting.
