2025 Red Snapper Season Thread

I kind of wanted to track the season progress on here, after WLF claimed we caught 17% of our annual quota during the first week of 2024, even though seas were so rough we only made it out 1 day in a 26’ catamaran. My favorite time is September and October, after most of the fishermen have quit going, and sharks largely move on, so moving up the start every year makes me scared they will close it before primetime hits.
Haven’t seen many catch pictures online so far, hate that family obligations for me and my crew have kept us from being able to catch the dumb ones. Anyone on the OB been out?

Buddy of mine went. They did alright, got tossed around.
Same. I don't care for June/July weekends. Too many boats and too many sharks.

How far offshore y'all having to run? And the limit is 4 per person per day?
Posted on 5/5/25 at 7:04 am to AwgustaDawg
15-20 miles, not bad yes 4 per person per day

4/day. We are usually about 25-30 miles out of Grand Isle or Fourchon, the guys further west have a much longer run, Venice, it’s not nearly that far.

T,F,S were all no go. My marina neighbor attempted to go out on his new 39’ Contender and came right back in 15 minutes Friday afternoon.
Sunday, it got a lot better- my friend went out, but it was still sporty enough that his trolling motor couldn’t hold him- had do do it old school.
It should be on like Donkey Kong today

4 fish per day @ 7 days a week is way too liberal. They don’t seem to like when the season runs into the fall, which is really the only time I like going out there. But with such a liberal creel it gives the powers that be the math to justify closing earlier.
3 fish , Fri- Sunday was a sweet spot , but I know all the weekday guys don’t like that which is understandable.
Also think they should allow you to keep the 14 and 15 inchers as opposed to having a trail of dead ones floating down current from your boat. That would let guys get done and quit killing them every time they drop a squid down. My .002

It should be wide open for recreational fishermen. 4 per day all year.

Yep. Clip the commercial guys to cover the delta of the rec guys increases.

Even worse is the amberjack season. I went out two weeks ago and there were thousands at moxie. Water was crystal and we spent a few minutes hand feeding them the last of our pogies.

20 miles for 4 fish per fisherman is not terrible...4-6 folks thats a pretty decent meat run....
I am assuming most of you fill out the day with Vermillion and what not? Probably some kingfish ? Any grouper open during the snapper season?
In Florida almost all grouper is closed during most of the snapper season and even trigger fish are closed during most of it. Its also 2 fish per day. In most areas 20 miles would be a long run but for 2 fish a day and almost no other bottom fish of note open its almost not worth it.

Very controversial take BUT a quick google search indicates that commercial fishing in Louisiana contributes about $3 billion a year to the states economy while recreational saltwater fishing contributes about $7 billion a year. Several years ago a report from the Florida FWS indicated that a pound of bottom caught commercially in Florida added about $.70 to the states economy while the same pound of bottom fish caught recreationally added a little under $4.
As sad as it is commercial fishing is simply not sustainable. Dock fees alone now make it almost impossible to make a living at it. It always seemed like it would be a match made in heaven that boats with a commercial license should "hire" recreational fisherman, with the appropriate commercial license, to catch fish on a commercial trip. I assume most bottom fish are caught on hooks and line and not long lines. I don't see what it would matter to the boat who was reeling the fish in....let the recreational angler have their limit and the boat keep the rest they catch....seems perfect to me.
When I was a kid a friend of my stepdad had a commercial hook and line dolphin and grouper vessel permit out of Johns Pass Florida (supposedly the grouper capital of the world). During the season he would take me on commercial trips (I was 9 or so when this started) along with one deck hand. Sometimes my stepfather would go but not often. We would WEAR the Gag and Scamp OUT....he wanted to catch them under 10 pounds and over 5...and about 95% of them were in that range. Used a tom mann purple jelly worm on a 4 ounce jig head and a penn 9/0 reel and a grouper digger rod, basically a pool cue. Drop the worm to the bottom, bounce it around and almost instantly hooked up with a grouper or snapper or some other bottom species. It was a blast. We would catch and keep hundreds of them....and he made a pretty good living at it. I always thought it ought to be possible to charge people to do that...its far better than a charter trip with a 2-4 fish limit.....

That does sound like a great plan. But as we know …….

I talked to a guy in Melbourne a few years ago who had a hook and line mackerel license - Kings, Cerro and Spanish. They catch them by the thousands as fast as they can get them in the boat. When I mentioned I would love to go one one of those trips he said he would like to allow it but his deck hands wouldn't like it. I told him I not only wouldn't expect a share I would pay a small amount to go...still no go. I can't imagine why but I am sure they have their reasons....seems like one more spoon in the water would mean catching a boat load that much quicker. I can certainly understand them not wanting to take kids or people with no experience but someone who can reel in a 20 pound kingfish before a shark gets to it ought to be a plus on such a trip....
