They used them to treat some burns in WW2. The patients said it was terrible. The maggots did not hurt but they could feel them moving inside the wound and it was enough to drive them almost insane.

No, but Scruffy’s seen leeches used before. On injuries with severe vascular damage, such as a degloving injury (look it up if not squeamish), it is used to remove the distal blood and prevent clotting until the vasculature heals.

They consume dead flesh and are used as a last resort when other options have failed. If you have necrotic, dead flesh, you need to go to a fricking hospital.
