2025 4Runner TrailHunter Test

quote:

Hybrid models churn out up to 326 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque.

quote:

The cabin certainly doesn't feel $60K-plus nice, and I'm not sold on the benefits of the hybrid system. The lineup's overlap with the also-new Toyota Land Cruiser and Lexus GX550 further complicates matters. While there's a lot to like here, if I were in the market, I'd be very discerning with the order form. —Mike Sutton

quote:

Modern powertrains are resilient. It's rare in our testing to observe a thermal overload, but with Toyota's latest hybrid configurations that power the Sequoia, the Tacoma, and the Tundra, we've noticed the transmission temperatures flirting with the red zone. The same goes for the new 4Runner. After a handful of acceleration runs, the transmission heats up to the point that it upshifts earlier in the tach swing, and the thrust is dialed back. We don't hear a fan blowing in an attempt to cool the transmission fluid, and the temps are very slow to recover. All this while testing in mild ambient conditions has us wondering how this gearbox would stand up to abuse in the dunes or in sweltering heat. —David Beard

You act as if Chevy and ford trucks aren’t close to 100k?

Car prices across the board have been sky high since covid

Am I?

I must have missed that....

But since you mentioned it, those $100K trucks are 3/4-1-ton Diesels or very minimum large V8's that are designed to work as an adjunct for many professions in towing/construction, hauling things for a living.

This 4cylinder 4Runner is none of that...

I see nothing here that is worth trading in my current 4Runner.

I sort of like it.....but my big problem with this thing is that it's only incrementally better in some ways than the model it replaces but costs $20K more. They do have $55K 4Runners - and for that price I might be able to overlook the buzzy 4 cylinder engine.....but those models also look like a rental car with black plastic over fenders, very plasticky interior, and boring color combinations.

In many ways it seems like a compliance vehicle - ditching the bulletproof reliable V6 and 5 speed in exchange for a turbo 4 cylinder hybrid. Consumers didn't ask for that.

I hope that Nissan and GM are seeing the MSRP on these 4Runners and consider making a 4 door SUV based off their Frontier and Canyon/Colorado.

Not one fricking person is going trail hunting in that POS. Their packages are the dumbest thing about Toyotas, but apparently Americans love tough sounding sporty names…your TRD is just a poser minivan.

And the $100K luxury diesel trucks are arguably a better value than this $60K 4 cyl...

You have some absolutely ridiculous vehicle takes.

You like the colors, it’s OK.

Build up an SR5 with real off-roading parts…but that’s fricking obvious, right?

I don't own or want to own one of these. Your minivan comparison is just objectively stupid

I'm in the minority, but I'm not a huge hybrid fan.

The more I read, the more my opinion is that hybrids just add another complex system to a vehicle that is typically already very efficient.

In other words, too much sugar for a dime

They are used exactly like a minivan 99.99% of the time, and that’s the truth. I went though car line for many years.

I might be sold on it if the battery didn't consume so much cargo space.

The right move for Toyota would have been to put the V6 from the Tundra in the 4Runner without the hybrid. That's give the vehicle more power without robbing the cargo space. It's not reliable, but that's likely a problem with the 4 cylinder turbo too.

Cool, just like 99.99999% of all vehicles. What exactly is your point? No one should make anything besides minivans?

I think you can get a full sized SUV from Toyota for the same price.

And the gold colored wheels look stupid. A brushed metallic would look better on it.

I could get a very, very nice Tundra for the price of a 4Runner Trailhunter.

Maybe I'm alone here but I REALLY like the new Tundra 1794.

Yeah, all that 4cy stuff is bs.

You can build a powerful, reliable small displacement, but the only company doing that with any longevity is Porsche.

Eff a 4cyl in the Land Cruiser...
