How long will they keep if I lay the sack on some ice packs with a wet towel over the top? thinking about picking up a sack at Tony’s Friday morning for a Sunday noon boil in Houston. Will they still be good if I keep them out of the sun in my garage in the cooler?

i keep them 3 days at a time with no problem, you can put them in a cooler still in the sack and pour ice on them , just keep drain open, 3 days will be fine you may have a handful of dead.

Saw a video on Facebook of how a commercial crabber ( white boot warrior) packs crawfish for a road trip. He puts a piece of cardboard between the ice and sacks, then opens the drain. No wet towel. I’m gonna give it try this weekend.

Keep the drain open so they don’t drown and keep the lid cracked so they don’t suffocate and they will be fine.

Was discussed on the food board recently. A poster suggested putting empty water bottles under the sack to prevent any from drowning. Even with the drain open some will sit in water too long over 3 days.

Water dripping is important. If their gills dry out they will die.

Should be fine. I just buy 2 bags of ice, put on top of crawfish, drain open, with a brick or two under the opposite side of the drain so no water accumulates

So true!!! I would also put a board or something to angle the cooler to make sure the water drains out

I was out of water bottles last weekend so I cut up one of those thick pool noodles in about 12” pieces and used them the same way. Worked just as good.

My dad would put 2 bricks in the bottom of the ice chest and cut a piece of plywood the same size as the ice chest to put on the bricks. This was for crabs, but will work the same for crawfish.

Done this many times. Fresh crawfish lay in cooler, wet towel on top, cover with ice, open drain, brick or board under cooler to let water drain. Easily good for 2 days. The variant is- you don't know how many days they have already been in the cooler wherever you buy
