I've been taking my boys camping recently, and getting tired of loading all the gear and unloading at campsites. Thinking of getting one of those Plano or other brand plastic storage boxes with wheels to keep all the gear in. Anything particular I should look for, certain things to avoid etc?

I've got a medium sized tent that works for the three of us, a few fold up camp chairs, a camp stove, flashlights etc. Getting the tent back in its little zippered bag is always a pain, and making 2-3 trips back and forth to the car to grab the tent, then grab the chairs, then grab the cooler and other things is also a pain. Looking at one that is 37x18x14, and I could probably fit most of the larger items and a few smaller ones in there. Then whenever we are loading up to camp, grab this, grab the cooler, and off we go. Then when we get back home, it is already all packed up and just set it in the garage for the next time.

My advice is to get several of them of different sizes. I have a few and always end up taking more than one. As far as brands, they're all pretty similar. If wheels were required, I'd probably get the one with the best wheels rather than worry about the latches.

Take a look at the HDX 77 Gallon tote w wheels from Home Depot. It's bigger & only $60. I use it mostly for beach stuff and dry storage in back of truck when going on road trips. I do zip tie the lid on for extra protection to prevent lid from blowing off.

I second this and get the biggest nes they can fit on a hitch hauler rack.

I can stack three of them and the work perfect.

They should put those expensive Thule hitch boxes out of business.

I have one of these Plano boxes for all my turkey hunting stuff. Works good. But I don’t know if it would be big enough for everything you are wanting to put in it. I would get the bigger box someone posted earlier

I use the Rubbermaid Action Packers. They're sturdy enough to stand on.

I have 3 or 4 of them. One is around 30 years old, my dad got it when I was a kid. Still holding up.

Yeah, I've thought about the medium one as well. I'll check out the others too. I currently have an SUV as my company car, but will probably be switching to a smaller Pickup for my next one. Trying to plan ahead for that too. I'll probably end up with 2-3 at that point since I'll have more room in a truck bed and also will want stuff to be waterproof since it isn't going in the back of an SUV at that point.

Some have wheels. I don't use mine for camping, but the wheels come in handy.

That exact one you have pictured is excellent. I have one thats been in the back of my truck at least 6 months out of the year and it has never leaked or came open or anything.

I keep my hunting stuff in one similar to this. But may be a little bigger. It is built really well and has taken a beaten. I have some of the ones in your pic as well, but really like the one with the better wheels.

This a link to the storage bins Academy makes. I have the smallest version I keep on my boat to store dry safety items. The one linked has wheels.

Just wanted to give an update, and how I ended up with two of these. Ordered one from Amazon that was shipped via FedEx. Last week it was out for delivery, and I get an Amazon notification on my phone that it was delivered. When I get home, it isn't there. Ask my teenager if she saw anything, check the Ring camera, and it was never delivered to my house. I notice the FedEx tracking number, so I go to their website to track it, and see what is supposed to be the picture of the delivery. First, it definitely isn't my house in the picture, and second, it definitely isn't this box. I live in an old red brick house, and the picture was of a house with painted brick. There were two boxes in the FedEx picture, and one was a smaller one, said Crate & Barrel on it, probably an 8"x8" box. And a slightly larger box underneath it, but nowhere near large enough for something 3 feet long. This also shipped out from Arizona to Alabama, more on that in a moment.

I do a customer inquiry/claim or whatever FedEx calls it, and contacted Amazon as well. Amazon said to give it another day or two to show up, and if it doesn't, reach back out. I figured it was just dropped at the wrong house. I walked over to a few neighbors with white houses and asked, but none of them had seen it. The guy two houses down said he was expecting something from FedEx and it hadn't shown up either. Two days go by, I log back into Amazon, and they just issue a refund to a gift card on my account. I ordered another one, from a different vendor on Amazon. The email saying it had shipped was a UPS tracking number. I also have a login to UPS, and a couple days later get an email from them saying out for delivery. I never checked the tracking, but it was at my front door when I got home. That was 2 days ago. Yesterday I get the alert from Amazon that my package is out for delivery, which I thought was odd since it arrived the day before, but thought maybe there was a glitch in their software or a delayed update.

I got home yesterday, and there was another large box at my door. So then I started wondering. I log into my email and to Amazon, and start looking at tracking and order numbers. The first one that arrived shipped from Indiana, and the second one from Illinois, neither from Arizona like the FedEx one that never arrived. Neither box had any paperwork in it, just my address and a tracking number label on the outside. I have no clue how two of these showed up shipping from different locations, but I now have two identical ones, and figure it is a shipping mishap on someone, but I don't know how or why. Either way, I was probably going to get multiple boxes at some point but now I've got two of this size and I packed all my gear in them last night and have a little room to spare, so it worked out great. I have a 6 man tent, and three twin size air mattresses in one box, and I have 3 camping chairs, a camp stove, a shovel and axe, and a few other smaller items in the other one. All packed up for this weekend's camping trip.

I use smaller ones outside for a bunch of things and they are about as water tight as water tight gets. The sun will eventually get to them but they will last 3 years or so in direct sunlight and exposed to any and all weather.
