"People were saying mean things about me, so I pivoted to another position in the hope that people start saying nice things about me again."
Yay
Yay

His explanation is dangerously close to admitting he manipulated the stock market. He needs to tread lightly on saying "I did it to calm the markets."

You mean the guy that pumped and dumped two official meme coins would manipulate the markets? Say it ain't so!

You guys think it was the bond market that finally broke him?

What then you think made him change his mind?

He’s the president of the most powerful nation in the world. Whatever he says/tweets in general is “market manipulation” if we’re going with a broad definition.
As far as labeling it illegal, good luck.

I think it was the bond market. Bessent was on CNBC this a.m. and used the term deleverage twice talking about the 10 year. That term scares the shite out of bond traders. That was the buzzword in the 2008 financial crises. Really think he told Trump lending could damn well lock up and the Fed couldn't help.

They all called his Bluff and he caved big time.

How did he cave when 10% for the real big guy is staying

Because he could have just done that on the front end. It's not like he needs to "negotiate" for the 10%; it's a purely unilateral decision. Instead of behaving like a jackass for several weeks, he could have simply announced that a worldwide 10% tariff was launching in 30 days and significantly higher, targeted tariffs would roll out in 90 days unless the countries in question negotiate for better.
And we'd find ourselves in basically the exact same position we're in now without sending the world economy into chaos and without the world now believing we're led by a petulant toddler.

Because he made a big spectacle of the reciprocal tariffs, called it one of the greatest days in American history, and pulled out the boards with their brilliantly calculated tariff rates that was a simple trade deficit ratio. Then he caves a week later and acts like that was the plan all along. If you think this wasn’t a panic move, you’re delusional.

My best guess is today's pivot was him simply following his negotiating tactics he described in his book.
He showed them a stick and then he offered them a carrot they could take to avoid the stick.

Hilarious that this is getting so downvoted

Hilarious that this is getting so downvoted DU apparently sent some people to the money board. The ratios lately are very out of character for this place.
This reminds me a bit of the PT "What happened to Rand Paul" thread, in which is somehow doesn't occur to the bulk of them that Rand has basically been what he is for two decades; they are the one's who have changed.
Is it possible that "the ratio" shifted because of a mass influx of outsiders? Sure. Is it also possible that Trump's actions are outside of the norm, even for Trump, which is causing a shift in said "ratio"? Absolutely.
Just my opinion, but I view the latter to be far more likely than the former.
ETA: For the record, I don't actually agree with the "illegal market manipulation" post. Simply addressing the larger issue you brought up.
