MSY Economy Recent Experience with timing

In short, most of the time short term is the best bet but economy is a far superior option to long term parking IMO. Yes, when it's 100+ degrees outside and you're checking alot of bags and there is a long line it changes things so alot has to be factored in but the timing and shuttle experience is fast and convenient most of the time.
Everyone has their own experience but I’ve used the economy lot at MSY in certain circumstances and have had mostly positive experiences but see others offer differing opinions largely based on preconceived notions, often which are not really accurate and frequently from second hand accounts. Anecdotal is anecdotal so this isn’t that much different but I knew we would fly on s ski trip this weekend and since it’s a long trip, where we have a lot of luggage (skis, boots, winter clothes, etc) so I didn’t wanted to make things as easy as smooth as possible so I was going to document the experience for others to see the type of experience you can have.
I started my stopwatch timer from the time we got out of the car and started walking to the elevator. Parked on the 4th floor planning to take the elevator to the first floor, short walk to baggage check in then board the bus and head to the terminal.
From the time I stepped out of my truck, grabbed our luggage, got to the elevator and made our way to the baggage check in (with nobody in line) it took 5 minutes and 47 seconds. Grabbed a small bottle of water from the counter, bags checked easy and fast and was sitting on the shuttle less than 4 minutes later.
5:47 to get to baggage check
9:19 to get luggage checked, carry-ons on the shuttle and sitting down waiting to depart for the main terminal
There was one shuttle ready to roll and two waiting to depart and we saw another on the airport access road heading back as we were heading out. They don’t use the side road anymore with the I-10 flyover now operating. Less than 14 minutes later we stepped out of the shuttle, had all of our carry-ons off, in our hand and were walking into MSY bypassing the check in area altogether for a total time of 22 minutes and 37 seconds from the time we parked our car.

cool
and it’s still faster and worth the extra few bucks to enter the short term garage from the departures ramp, park on 4 or 5, walk to the terminal and to TSA. If we are checking a bag we use curbside before going up the ramp.
MSY is super easy no matter what you do and for that I’m grateful that at least one thing was done correctly in this state

Nice breakdown and good to see a real example rather than hearsay.
MSY is easy to get in/out, like the other guy said it is one thing we got right in this state.
That being said I always do short term. I know it's probably a waste of money but the peace of mind to be able to park and walk right into the terminal means a lot to me. Not to mention getting home after a long day of flying and being able to walk out and get in your car without having another wait and then shuttle ride.

First, LSUfan4444, good job. That said I'm not against economy lot. But
This matters a lot. Also, 50%-70% of the time I'm flying solo on a short-trip and not checking a bag so the bag check at economy doesn't help me at all.
Last, I know not everyone can do this, but anything over a 1 night trip I rarely drive to MSY anymore, uber/lyft/taxi work for me.

The only thing I will push back on is the rental car setup. Had a nightmare this weekend with a flight that landed after midnight.
Having to take a 20min shuttle to the rental car agency, only to find myself behind a line of people that didn’t move for 30 minutes. Ended up calling an Uber from the rental car agency and cancelling my reservation. I’m pretty sure I would have been in that line for +2 hours.

I have heard the rental car setup for MSY is pretty shitty
Luckily that's my home base so I get to avoid that part

Park in my sisters garage and have her drop me off. Not having a car at the airport is my preferred method.

Have never done it at MSY, as it is also my home airport, but is the rental car setup at any airport ever a good experience?

Thanks for the review.
I agree with other posters about ST parking. From a “dollar saved” standpoint, if I want to cut corners, that’s likely not going to be it. I don’t like putting variables into my equation if I don’t have to (the shuttle).
If you have TSA/Clear, you can park and be at your gate in less than 10-15 minutes fairly often. That’s hard to beat when you’re crunched for time.

The flaws:
1. On-Site Parking Garage Size - It’s Fairly inexcusable to run out of on-site parking for a new airport as often as I’ve experienced it. Not sure if they intend to leverage economy parking in perpetuity, but that doesn’t make sense either.
2. Rental cars - I’m local but jeez that’s an inconvenience from what I've heard from others and family that have had to utilize.
3. Baggage claim - I don’t check bags that often but I have never gotten my bags in what I would call a reasonable time. I’m still not sure what’s wrong with that. I tell people all the time to try to avoid checking a bag through MSY it possible.

I love everything about this post. This is great.
That said. Reserving short term parking is overwhelming our go to at msy for anything under a week.
