I went birding at Jefferson Island on Thursday...it was a beautiful day! Here are some of the pictures I took...

Great Egrets...a few of these guys were starting to build nests...

White Ibis...there was only one as far as I could tell...

Common Gallinule...there were at least 2 pairs..

Roseate Spoonbills...there were many of these guys, and they were the main reason I went...I hope to go back and see chicks later on...

Added Bonus...swamp puppy

Mate how do you deal with the sadness of seeing chicks (say 8 of them) and then the next time you visit there's only 6 of them. And then the next time there 5. It's so heckin sad that I don't visit our local estuary for several months

Spoonbill is a goofy looking bird which looks like it belongs somewhere else.

There are occasionally roseate spoonbills in the batture around Harahan, but they have just a little pink on their wings.

The red coloring comes from their diet. The nearer to the coast they are, the more red/pink coloring they get.

Great shots PWs!

No pics, but I saw a pair of bald eagles circling when I was driving Friday. Had a long look at them, and didn't put her in the ditch in the process.

Very nice pictures. Have you any of eagles or humming birds?

Mate, how do you get out of bed every morning knowing that you're going to have to deal with yourself all day long?

That's gotta suck arse.

Nice shots.

A couple of years ago, I was out taking pictures of the spoonbills and the "puppy" followed me closely as I walked along the levy.

I kept one eye on him.

yeah, this guy was sunning himself on the path when i was walking around...he went into the smaller pond and popped up to keep an eye on me...there were a few others that i saw, and they were all smaller than this one...i'd estimate he was 6-8 feet long...

Nice photos. I had a not so good duck lease south of Lake Charles in the late 90's. I was always worth waiting to around 10AM even if not a single duck or goose seen all morning. From east to west a line of roseate spoonbills would fly north over the lease stretching as far as I could see.

It was a sign that all was right with the world to see them.

that's awesome! i've seen wood storks flying in large flocks near crawfish ponds in Acadia Parish...i'm horrible at taking pictures of birds in flight, but i always love seeing large groups of any type of birds flying over...

Everything was still and quiet when they flew over. Just the icing on the cake of a day at the edge of pasture (mostly flooded) and marsh.

I've found that bird watching really seems to help with stress and anxiety...actually anything that gets you out in nature...

and if anyone has any recommendations for other birding locations, i would appreciate it!
