One of my colleagues slipped up and mentioned his salary which is $20K more than I make….. I know you make your own deals but I did not have a chance to negotiate on my promotional raise 2 years ago. I feel the need to speak to management or just find another job. Been at my workplace for 12 years.

Sounds like you need to speak to management or find a new job.

contact HR and inquire about a raise. you should be doing this every two years at least.

Go talk to your superiors about it. Not that complicated.

if you've been doing a good enough job, they wouldn't have been desperate enough to overpay for the newer guy.

Maybe he is overpaid and will be the first to be laid off?

Go to your manager and ask for a talk. But before doing so, you need to put together your case as to why you should receive a raise. And that reason can’t be because this other guy is making $20k more than you. You have to make the case that the value you bring to the company is worth (X) dollar more than what you’re being paid now. It’s up to you to make the case. And I’d make sure you lay out your case in a professional, non-emotional manner, backed up with facts and figures.

Best of luck to you.

It's very easy to get salary pay ranges these days for all kinds of job. research that information and then also compile a list of accomplishments you've made and contributions at work and go to your boss and have a rational calm discussion about a pay raise. But be fully prepared to be told sorry and then you have to make the decision to find another job if you're unhappy enough.

Whatever you do don't go tell your boss "Jody makes 20K more than me it's not fair give me a raise"

This. Print out two copies. One for you, one for the boss.

Does he have more job responsibility than you? Maybe something you don't know about?
