The Calisto Protocol (2 years later)

So being a Dead Space fan I was really bummed that TCP received such poor reception upon launch. Especially the PC and Xbox versions. I thought I' d wait for some patches and eventually pick up on sale. It launched on Game Pass a while back and finally got around to playing it...and well the best praise I can give is.... I kinda loved it.
Let me first off admit I'm a graphics whore and easily amused. Games like The Order 1886 and Ryse Son of Rome, that have stunning visuals but simple gameplay and short single player campaigns still appeal to me if Im not paying full price. As with those titles TCP looks absolutely gorgeous in visual dept, the combat is simple yet I found it satisfyingly brutal, and the length isnt too short at around 12 hours.
Now some may replace the word simple with boring as far as the combat and I thinks thats fair but I still enjoyed it. I have to mention I played on min security (Easy mode) and I still died a fair amount due to the at times shitty camera and my own impatience or experimenting. I also only played like an hour or so at a time so the combat didnt really get a chance to get stale. The melee combat is pretty much dodge, strike, repeat with a very simple dodge mechanic. Throw in some guns and a kinesis throw ability and you have a decent but at this point kinda standard mix of offensive options. There are not many guns and they arent all that impressive as far each gun adding new tactics to the fight but they are upgradable. What I enjoy is frankly the spectacle ,weight , and punch of combat. Bodies, blood and chunks of flesh fly in all directions and scatter on the walls . I even enjoyed my own deaths as they play out like fatalities on Mortal Kombat.
The gameplay is also pretty linear. There is no map or objective markers. There are branching paths and discoverable areas but you cant just go off an get lost in the environment. The discoverable areas that often bring you deep into these extremely claustrophobic and dark places were some of my favorite parts of the game. And it all looks stunning. I could gush on and on about the visuals. Its for the most part metal hallways covered in blood, gore and alien bio mass but its all so detailed with incredible lighting. Each gameplay session there were areas that I just stopped and stared in awe of the environment. Music was serviceable... sound effects were very good especially all the little ambient noises.
Now for the bad. The story is almost non existent. Even with the DLC's added info and" true ending" there just isnt much to dig into. A simple story can be fine if the characters are interesting but there just isn't any character development at all. They are portrayed and voiced acted well but there just isnt anything there to emotionally tether to imo.
You can also really see the reported abrupt cut in development time. From the recycle of bosses to the fairly limited enemy and weapon types to environments that just seem to be missing content. Lastly as I mentioned the camera can suck in combat. Getting whacked by enemies outside my view was a common occurrence and perhaps my lack of frustration that other players felt over the combat was because I was playing on easy mode and was not getting badly damage with each strike of the enemy. Some folks also complain about how slow Jacob moves but I didnt mind it. It adds to the weighty feel of the whole game that I liked.
Having a shite story, uninteresting characters, and somewhat uninspired and flawed gameplay should be major turn offs for me but traipsing through the Iron Gate Prison was such visual feast and the bashing, shooting, and impaling of mutated humans just didn't get old for me. If you can get it for cheap or try it on Game Pass I recommend at least giving it a shot .

For the first 2-3 hours I was like "this game is awesome, I dont see how the reviewers hated it so much." Then the game never evolved or improved for the rest of its runtime. Same bosses, same enemies, same combat, complete nothing story. Everything just got so stale and I kinda hated it at the end

Yea I totally get that perspective. Even though I enjoyed it there was so much potential to be FAR better and sadly it looks like it the end of the road for the series. I tend to play some games in really small increments bc I reralize the gameplay is pretty shallow. Like sometimes just hour or two a week. I think I started this game at the end of Jan.and just now finished it and the DLC. Anyway I 'm sure that helps to keep my entertainment level per session elevated.

I thought it was a cool game until I got to the end (I think it's the end). I couldn't kill the final boss. I just kept shooting and blowing stuff up. It just wouldn't die. I walked away and haven't gone back to it ever since..

All the bosses as I recall you shoot them till they go down and then melee them. Rinse repeat. I played on Min security though

Trying this now on Game Pass. I'm at the first stealth area in solitary confinement. Took a break because I'm already kind of bored. Does it pick up soon or this pretty much what to expect?

Having just watched a YT challenge video on it, you shoot him in the face to break the shield, then shoot him in the face again to do damage. Rinse and repeat. No other part of him takes damage, and you can’t reach his face with melee.

i got tired of it as well. looks great on oled 32:9 monitor. i played about 4 hours and just got bored with a few fights than crawling through a cutscene of squeezing through pipes.
I looked up to see if I am the only one and noticed majority of dislikes are due to this as well.
no progression in this game.
story predictable as well.

I was really hoping this would be a Day's Gone situation where a game that initially gets shite on but sort of reaches cult classic status. Both games star Sam Witwer.
Unfortunately that was not the case with this game. It looks amazing, but the combat is probably the worst I have ever seen.

I'm trying to remember which part that is....is it the SHU? The combat does not really breakout at any point beyond much of what you see at the beginning. A few new enemy types, a few boss fights ,new weapons and upgrades add some more flavor but if you arent having any fun now you will likely not have much more fun later. I did.. but as I said in my review, Im easily amused.

I soldiered on and made it to the Aftermath level. Logically, the game should be fun. The graphics are outstanding. But in the process of trying to wow gamers, it forgets the fun factor. The game has more in common with Dead Space--but the remake, unfortunately. I loaded up the original Dead Space and before I knew it, I was was having so much fun that I was already on Chapter 4. I guess Calisto could've been a fun game, but it gets in its own way. It needed more OG Dead Space and less Dead Space remake.

One of my favorite gaming streamers just did a video on this game. Seems odd the two headed monster is like 3/4 of the bosses in the game.

According to the developer their development time was cut by I think 3 or 4 months. I'm not sure what that time would've added to the overall experience according to what I've read several bosses. Enemy types and actions.sequences never made it.

If you’re referring to The Backlogs, that’s the challenge video I was referencing

Love him, though he obviously got a bit weird during the election.

He clearly had feelings in it, but I never heard him really discuss it, unless I missed it. But yeah, Lemon is good people. I don’t interact with him/the channel as much as I used to, though. Channel has just gotten so big. But still a tuition paying academy member and definitely still enjoy his scripted videos.

A while back, I decided to start adding a bit of recurring revenue to his stream in return for my consuming his early backlog like a drug
But he’s always been clear during his streams: if you watch the videos, he’s good. Everything else is lagniappe.

I need to be better about that, send a couple of bucks a month to all the streamers I enjoy.
