Played the Island today (3/2/25), and the greens are in bad shape. I have played there so many times the last few years and the greens have always been in good shape. So many of the greens today had bare patches, was hard to believe. Very disappointing to see the greens there worse than Webb golf course as far as bare spots. I hope the course superintendent gets it better soon or will not go back for a while.

I think courses just kind of survive in winter. Hopefully it will improve in spring.

That foot of snow 6 weeks ago probably has most courses not looking as good as they usually look in March

Just something to keep in mind before you trash courses and/or their greens keeping staff. We literally just had a once in a 125 year event take place down here.

I also played The Island yesterday and while I wasn't super impressed for the price, I wouldn't say the greens were in "bad" shape but not worth $70. I also played the LSU course on Friday so my opinion is very subjective to what I'm used to

No hotdogs in the clubhouse though

Both SM and BC have been in decent shape and aren’t charging the premium rate. Sad to hear this about the island, but at almost $70 a round for the weekend, I’ll be checking out other courses.

$70 for a weekend round of golf is what $35 was just a few years ago. The cost centers are way higher. The demand is way higher. My club charges $92 for weekend guest rates when it was $65 ish in 2019.

Comparing cost of a taxpayer subsidized round at Santa Maria and Beaver Creek to the Island or any other course in the area isn’t fair to that particular course.

An article just a few years ago if said basically a round at Beaver Creek is subsidized over $20 a golfer.

a morning weekend round run 60 bucks a golfer.. so the extra 20 isn't a huge advantage for Beaver .. Plus if you prepay for a morning round with Cart at the BREC site its $47 per .. so basically working with the same money relatively speaking ..

I will say having Played Beaver, SM and The Island all in the past month ..

Beaver of course is in the best shape... But the soil conditions they're working with at Beaver are way more conducive premium conditions..

Island would be 2nd .. It'll be fine in spring..

SM for what they charge is meh at best...

I live at Copper Mill. We did 31,000 thousand rounds last year. If you think an extra 620,000 a year doesn’t matter you’re sadly mistaken. Golf courses are always easier to manage and run the more money you have. Just like most things in life you can fix a lot of issues if you have the dollars to throw at the problem.

That’s more employees that can keep up with maintenance. More chemicals to be used to keep weeds at bay. For us it would mean a new clubhouse as well.

In the next week or two we have a crew coming hand pull all the Poa off the greens. After investing in new greens we want to keep them up. That would have been unthinkable a few years ago. That’s what money can help with.

I was coming to post something similar when I saw someone comment on the price and then saw it was $70. Out in Houston, I used to scoff at some course charging $80 for a round. Now, if I can get anything in the double figures on a weekend, I take it and run with it.

You did read the thread correct? The round at the Island is $70, the round at Beaver is $60 + $20 = $80.. So were only talking $10 difference and we have zero clue as to number of arounds played at either.. And that's not taking into account if people are booking and prepaying through BREC online which would in turn make the over income at Beaver less than The Island.. There a lot of variables not revealed here ... You just can't go out and throw and arbitrary number and call it fact..

Figure out the driving range situation.. at very least replace that retarded 75 yard area with something like Webb has.. The clubhouse would be the least of my concerns..

Nice, I was there yesterday and didn't see a ton of it and the course is in great shape.. especially once all the bunkers are completed.. Hit a ball into bunker yesterday on good Lord did that thing rocket back out of there..

Frankly, I'd rather hit a sand wedge and watch the ball flight than I would hit a driver into a net that's 15 yards away.

I know I'm in the minority, but I really don't care about a driving range. I am someone who rarely uses one and I'd rather hit a few chips and a few putts and get my round going.

I'm a Pelican Lakes member and honestly can't tell you the last time I've hit a ball from either side of the range. I'll play Copper Mill tomorrow and may hit a wedge or 2 from the mat, but am more likely to hit some chips and putts then get going.

Gonna be windy! Let us know how conditions are. Earlier post says good, I’ve heard the opposite from my group and we just booked at Beaver for Friday afternoon.

I know everyone is a bit different .. I always feel like I need some full swings with a couple different clubs in the bag before a round.. I do like to chip around the practice green as well.. But I rarely ever putt.. especially at Pelican

My comparison is the fact that all area courses were affected by the snow and are doing better than The Island.

As far as tax payer subsidies, BREC is so mismanaged and actually pulls money from BC/SM to pay for other projects. That talking point can be put to bed until BREC gets away from its equity based system.

It really is!
What is SM? $50? I heard they are close to 50,000 rounds, which is absurd! But that’s 2.5 million. Plus whatever is allocated through tax money (let’s be conservative and say $750,000) That’s 3.25 million in money. Why? Obviously, it’s not going back to THIS course. Why do you need 50K rounds? BC and Webb and City and Clark aren’t far behind for rounds. So the big question is where is the money going?

It was windy af when we hit the back nine. Greens are mostly in good shape. There are some spots on a few of them around the edges that need attention. Love seeing what they are doing to the bunkers. They are playing as GIR right now, but it's going to be so much better once the reno is complete.

Supposed to play Beaver on Saturday, but weather looks questionable at the moment.
