‘Captain America: Brave New World’ Suffers 68% Drop in Second Weekend

It’s not uncommon for comic book tentpoles on the scale of “Captain America” to significantly slide in subsequent weekends. Yet this film, saddled with negative reviews and poor word-of-mouth, fell on the steeper side with a drop closer to “Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantumania” (down 70% after a $106 million debut) than “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” (down 47% after a $118 million debut). “Guardians 3” endured at the box office, while “Ant Man 3” became one of the few Marvel movies that failed to cross the $500 million mark globally and didn’t break even in its theatrical run.

even assuming it ends up south of $400 million, the highest costs i've seen reported were $350 million.
and it'll be on their streaming library for years to come.
they spent $270 million on the acolyte and made $0. I don't think this is gonna kill them.
Netflix paid $450 million for Knives Out and didn't even put it in theaters.
I think some of you will never adjust to the new reality of movies/media.

Disney still hasn’t come out with an official breakdown of costs so no one really knows the total overall including marketing costs. Some are estimating total overall is more around $360 million. I don’t blame Disney for not releasing the totals.

you missed the entire point of the post. the numbers don't really matter. as I pointed out further down in my post these companies are willing to drop $450 million on a movie to add to their library with no theatrical return.
so even with your $360 million number they are doing much better than that already sitting on $290 million after 2 weekends.

Wrong. That may be on the books what is being reported, for Brave New World, but that's an accounting gimmick. Likely they changed the LLC when they changed the title from New World Order. THAT total would also be added on to the cost of making the entire project, which will be well over 300 million.
But because it's not filmed in the UK, legally those numbers don't have to be released.

Lol the new Alien movie had a 71% dropoff. Furiosa had a 59% dropoff.
Transformers One had a 63% dropoff.
Gladiator 2 saw an increase of 22% week 2 and it sucks balls.
There are some things casuals will go see for months based off spectacle alone like Barbie or Wicked, but 95% of movies dont fit that, and especially not captain america.

Yes, because the only people who want to see this shite are millennial Redditors who are still obsessed about Marvel and making predictions about what the next 50 movies are going to look like because they still believe that Marvel is a true cultural force like it used to be.
So it makes sense that it would have a decently large opening weekend where these nerds all go and see it at the opening hyped as frick. And then it drops horribly because the average person doesn’t care anymore and the movie has no legs beyond the people who love every shite Marvel movie.

The Spider-man films have been great. other than that Shang Chi was probably the best one released. If you are a Dr. Strange fan MoM was a cool flick . I thought Sam Raimi did a good job with it and didn't mind seeing Rachel McAdams

That isn't remotely close to the final budget. They had multiple reshoots. No they aren't profitable yet. Not even close. Most of the revenue is international where they have to give up a larger cut of the box office and you aren't counting the cut of local box office. Those are gross revenue numbers. They have a long way to go before profitability and probably aren't going to get there with the initial release.

Disney has already made almost $300 million on something they spent less than $450 million on and will be added to their streaming later.
Amazon spent $250 million and planned to never release Red One in theaters until it got good reviews.
Would you say Netflix and Amazon "lost" money on those movies?

So, the same they spent on on Thor: Ragnarok in 2017? Don't be a child. We won't know the final "gross" spend for about a year. Even with the UK tax credits, the net spend will be well high of $280m and is probably in the $300m+ range.

They...split...the...gross...with...the...cinemas - roughly 50/50 - actually the better a film does overseas, the more that percentage drops.
If it doesn't crack $500m, it loses money. It may need much, much more to break even.

Netflix is printing money. Disney is having trouble in multiple areas of their business.
And they had a license to print money with Marvel and Star Wars and they pissed it all way, expensively.
